Ok this fries me!

I was at the adoration chapel after church. The person who sits for the “hour” had her cell phone on silent but was using it the whole time i was trying to pray. She was sitting near the front in a chair. I was deep in prayer and the women next to me her phone rang full blast and she left flustered! I mean is this really real?! Jesus comes to earth to save all humanity is born from a virgin, dies a horrible death, is humble enough to be brought to us through the bread and wine bringing his body, soul, and divinity… and really?! People can just sit there in front of Him and text? Let their phones ring? I mean I leave my phone in the car out of reverence and to make sure it doesnt go off. Anyways, Im thinking of calling the church office so that maybe they can hang a sign on the adoration chapel NO CELL PHONES!!

Out of curiosity, how do you know she wasn’t reading the Bible or some other spiritual reading material on her phone? I do that with mine on occasion during Adoration. And the other woman may have simply forgotten to set it on silent, as accidents can happen. What if she was expecting a very important phone call, like from a hospital about a loved one and decided to pray in front of our Lord until she got news?
 
I have apps on my iPod which I have used in church to pray–I don’t use them during Mass, but before and sometimes after. I have a book with a lot of Holy Hours and I would use it if I had the chance.

Just saying that she might be using it in that way.

Of course she should have turned off the ringer, but maybe she forgot.
 
Do you know with certainty what the woman near the front was doing? Maybe it was a prayer or reflection app. Personally, I would leave flustered, too, if my phone rang in the adoration chapel since I usually make an effort to silence it. Maybe you ought to pray for these folks instead of worrying about what they’re doing. From what you’ve posted, it doesn’t seem like there was any intentional irreverence, disrespect, or harm.
 
True, she may have been innocent. :gopray:
But it wouldn’t hurt to ask the Pastor if he could place something in the bulletin regarding cell phones in Church. He may think it’s a good idea. 🤷
I keep mine with me because I don’t want it to fry in the car. Too hot.
But I turn it all the way off.
 
I use my phone to follow along on the Sunday readings during mass – I sit at the organ in the choir loft, so no one sees me. But we don’t have the readings in our books up there, and I have enough to carry, and enough books to be fumbling with, without bringing along my missal.

And if I don’t follow along visually, I zone out because I have to focus on the music – there’s a lot of it at the beginning of mass, and it can be very distracting as a musician. So I use my phone to follow along and keep my mind focused.

I have also used my phone to read the Psalms, read the writings of the Saints, do a scriptural recitation of the Rosary… in the adoration chapel.

And I have been in text message exchanges DURING MASS about my mom’s health when she had major complications after surgery two years ago. Even though she lives in California and I in Colorado, I was the one who had to call a parish out there to ask for a priest to visit her ASAP.

Point is, YOU have no idea what people are doing with their phones, or why. When I’m in the adoration chapel, I hardly notice who is even in the chapel with me, let alone what they’re doing – sit in the front if it bothers you so much to see people acting so much less holy than you.

Hi, I agree with you. 🙂 When in Church, people need to get their phones put on silent or have them turned off. It might have been a mistake though, with the phone ringing, if it just happened this once, with this person.

In terms of the person using their phone the whole time - what did people do before technology. They managed. Tapping and fiddling is off-putting. Ultimately, all one can do is bring it up with the priest. Up to you if you do or not. But it is in his hands then. I sympathise. When one is in Church, one is there to pray. Period. Of course, they could have been using it to pray a long set of prayers, or something, but I still think there is something highly disrespectful about using phone technology in the Church.
 
If the person’s phone rang once and she left, flustered, then my guess is she forgot to turn her phone off, or maybe thought it was off and it joggled back on (some models can do this especially the iPhones with the little mechanical switch), and she was embarrassed. She didn’t mean to interrupt.

As for the texting person, I too have used my phone to bring up readings, meditations, or prayers I am trying to learn. I get daily readings and Lectio Divina from USCCB in my email - the readings are often not in the church Missalettes for days other than Sunday. And when learning a new chaplet I often have to use instructions for the first couple of months. This is why I don’t like to use my phone in the church, because other people just go nuts when they see a phone being used when you could be using it for a legitimate worship purpose. I have also been in the situation where I had some medical emergency occur with an elderly parent or other relative. If the texting is not making any noise then it’s not disturbing anyone else and not for others to judge.
 
I just saw a sign with large letters saying we are in the adoration chapel to talk to God and that God doesn’t talk to us by cell phone! Then, it ended by saying to shut off cells during adoration. 😃

once upon a time, books in church were new “technology”… when they started having missals. People should be focused in God instead of fiddling around with books! 😉
 
Using phones in Church to read , follow readings, prayer is great. I have 4 different chaplet s/,Rosaries on my phone. Priests and choir use tablets and phones. Its great. Saves trees.

The sign should say turn your phone onto Do Not Disturb. With instructions

Nonsense! God can speak to us in any and every way He wishes!

Why is everyone so adamant that OTHER people must pray in the way they pray?

Sheesh.

Maybe we should have a sign that says, “If you cannot mind your own business in the adoration chapel, sit in the front pew and try to maintain custody of the eyes.”
 
What did people do a few short years ago before cell phones were invented? 🤷
The readings should be followed in the books that the Church pays for.

Any true emergency could not be responded to by someone at Mass for an hour!

As soon as they get outside they can make all the calls they want! :rolleyes:

usually adoration rooms here are too dark for books…

Only the written word has been around for a very long time. And Scripture itself contains the Word of God.

I liken people using their phones/technology in Church to those families who sit there fixed to their phones through meals at table, for whatever the reason.

Tell that to the Fire Chief whose beeper went off during Mass. A brush fire was threatening the entire town.

Should he have waited for Mass to end before responding? If he had, it’s possible there wouldn’t have been a church for us to attend Mass in the next Sunday.

I know of a simultaneously devastating and amazing account of how a tsunami had swept through this huge area of a country, destroying everything in its path, except for the Church in the area where people were celebrating Mass. They all survived. Sadly, others outside of the Church, did not.

Look up: ‘Our Lady of Good Health’, Vailankanni, India.

Reading books of meditations or Scripture or prayers is a perfectly acceptable way to adore the Blessed Sacrament. If the Church thought otherwise, they would not normally put books in or just outside of the adoration chapels for people to use. The several chapels I visit have a variety of materials including rosaries, prayer cards, and whole shelves of books available for people to use during their adoration, and you can also read a prayer or Scripture or meditations on your phone or iPad. As long as your mind is on Jesus then it doesn’t matter if you read Jesus-centered material, pray prayers, or just mentally talk to Him, or just adoringly look at Him, or a combination of all of the above.
