I will be asking a lot of questions tomorrow - it might be my last day of work!

I’m sorry jm, I’m just so overwhelmed…

I thought that if I just worked my hours in May, everything would be allright - I could pick up my daughter in June, and carry on. I can’t even pay for the storage unit now, and they may sell my things…

I’m afraid of losing everything:(
I’m so sorry. I want to send you a hug.

:console: :hug3:

I know it must be really hard for you to think straight, right now, or to know where to turn, or what to do next. You must be feeling sick to your stomach and scared, right now, and I know what a horrible feeling that is. 😦

Please know that I’m praying for you, and please don’t be afraid to ask for help from the Church.

Does your company have an emergency fund for employees who are having difficulties? Check with HR.

I’m in the same position right now,and I know how you feel. I’ll pray for you. I wish I could do more…

I’d be real careful about this tactic. Cause a large company some bad publicity, and the OP may find themselves out of a job.

Might also check with a local Knights of Columbus council. They can often help, especially if you are registered in your local parish. Just ask the parish office for the local chapter.
YOu are right. I thought of it after I hit the “submit” button.

I have been on Medical leave for back surgery for 2 months. I recently returned to work about May 7. My company then began taking double medical deducations - for current and past medical coverage. This was fine with me.

Today, however, I checked my account, and I have NO deposit. I called the company, and was told that they prepaid me some money last week because the system would be down, and they overpaid so this week they took the two deductions, PLUS the overage. They left me with nothing! Literally!
I drive an hour to work and have $6 in tolls each day. There is no way I’ll be able to afford to get to work.

I can’t believe this. I told them I didn’t know about the prepayment thing - I was on Medical Leave. Plus my manager was on vacation the last two weeks.

I don’t have enough money to make it to the next payday. I’m in shock. I don’t know what to do. Quit? Run out of gas on the highway?
Elizabeth
Could you not ask your fiance to help you out?

My company thinks it’s not ‘cost-effective’ to telecommute - although I did point out to my leader that their assessment was done years ago and may no longer be valid…

I’m just an hourly worker - no power to charge a cab to anyone - and they would tell me that it’s not their problem…

I don’t know about the Society - I pretty new to the area. I could maybe call the church office about that? Not sure…
Elizabeth
Call your church. They should be able to help you.

For me, unfortunately, there can’t be a garage sale…
At the time of my emergency surgery I was preparing to move…everything I own is in storage in another city. I was taken in by a Catholic friend who graciously helped me when I couldn’t drive or even walk much. My short term disability paid me a whopping $40 a week while I was out. Because of the surgery I had to send my 6 year old daughter to stay with my ex so she could finish Kindergarten. She is supposed to return when school is out in June. I don’t know what this will mean to that plan…

Elizabeth
Hi funny–I’m so sorry about all of this.

May I ask a few questions? What do you mean they took ‘double deductions?’ If you are on short term disability, the $40 per week that you received, was that after the deductions? I had neck problems years ago, and was on first, std, then ltd…AND I WOULD ENCOURAGE EVERYONE ON HERE TO GET THAT THROUGH YOUR EMPLOYER–IT’S CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP, AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN. (If you’re injured ON the job, it’s workers comp–off the job it’s on you–and if you don’t have ltd…you need to look into getting it)

What do you mean you had no deposit? You were out for two months, had surgery, came back around May 7th…typically, in cases like yours…your vacation pay is first exhausted, then std, if the company has that. What was their reason for no deposit? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to understand and maybe help you.😦

Go to your work and sit down with your manager and someone from HR. Determine what went wrong and see if there is a way to adjust.

Borrow from a friend, your mom, your neighbor - there is surely some person in your life who will loan you $50 til payday.

Public transportation - is there a bus you can ride to work. That will be less than tolls + gas.

Carpool options.

You have something of value to sell - every one does.

TV, computer, something.

St. Vincent de Paul, Red Cross. Get creative!

Thanks for all the responses, I’ll try to cover the situation…
I did go to work today, and talked with my supervisor who then went to the payroll people - but the issue for them wasn’t that they took my entire pay, it was whether or not they’d be taking MORE next week! No answer yet on that one.
My leader’s suggestion is that I take off Tues and Wed unpaid, (I’m off Mon) and wait to get paid THursday and then use that to get by until the following week payday. The problem with that is that if I take those two days off - obviously I won’t get paid for them, hurting my income again!😦

Carpooling isn’t an option because I live an hour from my office - I’m on the ocean, and I work in Orlando. I’ve been applying to places close to home, but no calls yet.

I did meet with the person who handled my medical leave. She referred me to some food banks. It’s not really the food I’m worried about - I have frozen food, cereal, etc. It’s the gas/tolls that are the problem…

SO, since I was at my office today I didn’t get a chance to make contact with anyone yet…I’m off Sunday/Monday, so I can network on Monday and see what I can work out.

I’d appreciate prayers as I try to figure out how to get through…thanks, everyone:o

Thanks for the update. I’ve been wondering about how you were doing. Does no one in your corporation see the perfect STUPIDITY of putting you in this situation???

Sorry I missed this question -

My mother is in a nursing home with dementia and Stage Three cancer. I am her Health Care Power of Attourney.

My brother is in Germany awaiting possible deployment to Iraq for the second time.

I was on STD - that’s what they paid me after taxes. I was shocked at how little it was. So they did exhaust my vacation and sick time prior to that. Prior to this I hadnt missed a day in 6 months.

As I mentioned before, everything but my car and computer are far away in storage…

I might sound stupid but I think that it is illegal for the company to deduct 100% of the paycheck. I think that there is a limit set by the federal government. Take a peek at this link and see if it applies to you.

I’m so sorry you are in this situation. :hug1:

I don’t advocate using credit cards, except in cases where you can pay them off or you have absolutely no other choice. Is this an option for you to pay for gas and tolls and your storage bill?

Even the founder of the Capitalist system, Adam Smith, said that the employer has a moral duty to take care of his employees. He said that employees are not to be used as slave labour without any benefit to themselves for the work that they do; otherwise the Capitalist system will erode, as the employees scramble to find some other way to take care of themselves - it will hurt their business, in the long run, if you as an employee can’t trust them to take care of you.

Other employees are probably also watching what’s happening to you, and they know that they could be next - I bet you are not the only one looking for another job, right now.

um check with your HR department because when i was working in HR my understand was that the company was allowed to take deductions only up to a point. They legally always had to pay you at least min wage times the number of hours you worked.

If your pay is normal $9 and min wage $5 and you worked 40 hours a week then the most they can take per pay period was the difference which was $4 times the number of hours.
I agree!!!

Thanks for the link, it DOES look like you were right about the minimum wage rule, I’ll see what they say tomorrow - if they work on Saturdays.

I’m scheduled 9:30-2 tomorrow - hopefully there will be some answers…

No answers at work - no one’s in on Saturday I guess.

Monday morning I’ll be on the phone, though. I can see my paycheck online prior to Thursday’s payday, so if it’s not right I can work on it for a few days…
Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ll be trying some of them!

I just spoke with the storage people, they will let me pay by July 1, so that’s a relief. When they saw the bill was due, they called and left me message because my name "jumped out’ at them.

I had given the manager tickets into DisneyWorld so he could propose to his now fiancee there. She had no idea!❤️

I’m just grateful that they called me!!!

As far as work, no answers yet ,but I am over despairing about it. I will do the maximum I can to be frugal, (I kind of already was, but one can always take it up a notch)

As for my daughter, I will let her stay in SC through FAther’s Day. I think it would be wrong to take her back and leave her father alone on that day, so I will let him have that…meanwhile, I will work as many hours as I can to overcome this deficit…I’ll keep missing her, but at least when she returns I’ll be able to care for her properly…

God love you! I KNOW you’re going to get past this tough patch. Hang in. Follow every reasonable lead. Let us know if the $%#! payroll department at your company WAKES UP!

Thank you MercyGate, I appreciate your encouragement…I look forward to the day we’re clear of this.:juggle:
