Sorry for my ignorance I just don’t know if they are 1) in communion with Rome and 2) what’s the difference between an SSPX latin Mass and a nonSSPX Latin Mass?

Thank you all for any explanation.

The SSPX are in an irregular relationship with the Church. Many Catholics including myself don’t want to support that by attending their Masses, and the Church also doesn’t encourage faithful Catholics to attend SSPX.

A Catholic who wants to attend a Latin Mass can go to one offered by FSSP, ICKSP and diocesan priests and not worry about supporting a group not fully in communion with the Church.

The ritual of the Mass should be the same everywhere.

I wish I could remember the emoticon for chewing popcorn because this questions always leads to highly emotive discussion. I know where I stand on this and that’s going to be good enough for me from now on. Contributing to the discussion on this question is not worth the risks involved in raising one’s blood pressure. 😃

They have Irregular status. Francis is still trying to reach out to them, though, which is why the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei was merged with another Vatican office. Such was a stipulation put forth by the SSPX.

In the past, we adherents of the MEF were told that we could participate at their Masses, and even contribute to the light bill. However, that came with a caveat. The rhetoric heard from the pulpit could turn one against Rome.

I am of the understanding that the Diocese of Knoxville, TN, now has a permanent Latin Mass in Chattanooga. This was the Bishop’s response to so many attending the Irregular Masses.

Am I receiving the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord at an SSPX Latin Mass?

You also receive the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ at Masses celebrated by Sedevacantists, but I still wouldn’t recommend going to their Masses.

They may have valid Sacraments, but they (the sedevacantists) scorn the Pope. They do not have the faculties to administer the Sacraments.

Yes, you are. Their masses are valid. There is no sin in attending their masses.

However, you should really try to attend a Latin Mass at a Catholic church/chapel which is in FULL communion with the Pope.

This would include Diocesan priests or religious priests (such as FSSP, Institute of Christ the King, Canons Regular of {fill in the blank}, Institute of the Good Shepherd, Benedictines, etc)

SSPX Masses are better than other sedevacantist orders, but you really should avoid the SSPX as much as possible.

I hope this helps.

God Bless

Since the only Latin Mass in 300 miles is held once a month, I occasionally attend SSPX Mass on the weeks when the diocesan one is unavailable. This is only occasionally. I usually attend my parish’s NO Mass. the Sspx chapel is small but the priest is incredible.

It’s . . . okay to attend the SSPX! . . .

As for the difference, I am assuming that you mean the difference between the SSPX Mass and the Mass said by the FSSP, ICKSP, etc. The Mass is the same, it is the Tridentine Latin Mass :). The only difference between Masses would be if it is a High or a Low Mass, Feast Day, etc. Hope this helps, and God bless!

We have both an SSPX Church and an FSSP Church in our general area (SSPX is slightly closer). I am a parishioner at the FSSP parish just because my spiritual director is one of the priests there. . . .

There are some things that are “ok”, meaning, not a sin.

There are other things that are recommended by the Church, regarded as the prudent course of action. This is the question that gets forgotten.

Pope Francis is trying to reach out to people who are already in this or that kind of irregular circumstance. Many grew up in a certain situation.
There’s no condemnation of those persons.

But prudence is still important.

Thanks Mark121359 but it comes to late, not for this thread, but I won’t need it in 30 days. 😭
