I’m reading a shakespear book but it has some of the characters in it curse and say take God’s name in vain. Is it ok if I finish it? Is it wrong because of that? Please anwser soon.

Please read it!! Shakespeare is WONDERFUL and should be required for any educated person to study.

Just don’t start talking like them and you’ll be fine.

Read it, then criticize the hell out of it 🙂
People will look down on you as uneducated if you openly admit to not reading it, is that fair? No, but hey what you going to do?

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings.*

I don’t think people will look down on me.

They shouldnt but they will. Shakespeare is a considered an essential of any education in literature.

You need to talk to your priest. It sounds like you might tend towards scrupulosity.

First welcome to the forum

No, it wouldn’t be wrong to read it. You are not cursing and it probably won’t lead you to curse so you are perfectly fine in reading a great book.

Then i suggest you not post these types of questions here. You need consistent help from your priest to work through your scrupulosity to discern these things for yourself.
I talk to a priest and a therapist about it, but I can’t call them every time I have a question. And I don’t think this is a scrupulous question. What is the problem if I ask them here?

Yes it is a scrupulous question.

The reason I suggest you not ask these types of questions here is that it can undermine your therapy and inject doubts and unnecessary worry. People who do not understand scrupulosity or who don’t know that you are scrupulous can give answers that will add to your anxiety due to your current inability to properly discriminate.

One of the things you can do is every time you see or hear someone taking God’s Name in vain is to say a little prayer. There are very short little prayers in lots of prayer books.

“Twelth Night”.
Wonderful play. I was in it actually 🙂

Think of it this way: should you not read the Bible because there are immoral people in it? Read the text, and take moral lessons from it. You can learn a lot from Shakespeare about the human condition.

Now if something is downright immoral and designed to incite immoral behavior, like pornography, then obviously you should stay away, but Shakespeare was a genius and should be studied with relish.
