I will not lump Marcel Lefebvre with her however if it wasn’t for him the Traditional Latin Mass would not exist as we know it today. All of us who love the TLM and who attend it every Sunday and holy day under the Indult owe a lot to him.

He may not be exonerated as of now, however if the rumors are correct he may be in the near future.

I have no access to a Latin Mass and would not care to go schismatic…but I am a member of Una Voce for I do love the Latin Mass and though it all Catholics do indeed worship with One Voice!

No need to worry, Cardinal Hoyos has publicly stated that SSPX is NOT is schism - - so GO!

Both Una Voce and the Institute of Christ the King are in full communion with Rome and accept fully the authority of the Holy Father. The institutes Prists are often used for indult masses around the world.

Many people seem to forget that Pop John Paul II, of blesed memory had a lot of admiration for Atchbishop Lefebvre. Whatever his errors were, he always accepted that the Pope was in charge and required that those in the society do so as well. His disobedience was regrettable, but in his mind justified by the time that he lived in and the challenges facing him. He easily could have stepped over the line into sede-vacantism, but never did. In fact there were rumors years ago that there were those in SSPX who had just such an opinion and wanted to make Lefebvre Pope. Allegedly he refused and kicked them out of the society.

I have never attended a SSPX mass and in good conscience could not, but I never doubted his or most of his followers sincerity and belief in the Catholic faith.

That is interesting to know. The members of the SSPX that I know are not that way. They scoff at Pope John Paul II and now Pope Benedict, and give out very angry literature. I am happy to know that the Archbishop was not like that. It gives me some hope for their full and undeniable acceptance of the Church. I know that Pope Benedict has been active in trying to reunite some of these various groups in the Church. I pray for this.

Actually it was the Arcbishops insistence on acceptance of the Popes position as head of the church that led directly to many of the divisions within the SSPX. Many of the followers did and still do assume the sedevacantist position and he, Lefebvre, struggled against that… In fact, there is a generally felt conviction among many of the more radical traditionalists that Lebfebvres’ position on the Pope is completely wrong, and that you cannot accept the authority of the Pope without fully embracing** ALL** of the reforms of Vatican II. They saw Lefebvres position as being illogical and wishy washy. After his death, the SSPX has experienced a LOT of problems internally over that and similar issues.alone.

A number of articles on this subject have been written by a Reverend Anthony Cekada, whichtake the position that Lefebvre was wrong in trying to remain in ar least partial communion with Rome.

What Dario Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos ACTUALLY said was: “IF there is no schism”. There is a big difference between that and NO SCHISM.

The Pope said in Ecclesia Dei that Archbishop Lefebvre and the four new Bishops were excommunicated.

What the Pope says takes supremacy over what a Cardinal says. Even if the entire College of Cardinals were to get together and say that the SSPX is not in schism, what the Pope says outranks the Cardinals.
