My brother and I really like the music of Matisyahu (an Orthodox Jew who does raegge). Is this anti-Catholic or a sin or something? Even though most of his songs are about Judaism, (i.e. “Jerusalem”, “King without a Crown”) is it okay for a Catholic to listen to him?

Absolutely fine. I’ve heard a couple of his songs. Struck me as an unusual choice of musical style for an Orthodox Jew, but he’s good for sure. Nothing too awful in his lyrics.

Good to see a performer with real religious conviction, even if they ain’t Catholic 👍

btw - love the picture in your sig (one of my favourites) but you might want to rejig it and make it a little smaller. If you use something like photobucket it has a feature where you can do this.

In the song “King without a Crown”, why does he say “Ask on Shem for mercy and he’ll throw you a rope.” and “I want Mishiach now.”? Are these other names for God? I can’t figure it out.

ask Hashem for mercy…
Just like Christianity, we have different ways to signify God: Lord, Father, etc. Same thing for Judaism.

Mashiach means Messiah.

Mashiach means Messiah.
Right after I posted that I had an Epiphany and realised that!! Thanks for your answer.

Also, would it be proper for a Catholic to refer to God as Hashem? If I wanted to pray and I just said “Hasem help me because…ect.” Just curious.

It’s absolutely fine to refer to God as Hashem - same God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob after all …

and weren’t at least some of the Gospels originally in Hebrew? They certainly would’ve referred to Hashem 😃
