Greetings all,
I found an old 1962 missal, a book of the Gospels and a huge and beautiful 1920 missal just lying around at my parish. I was told I could take them if I wanted. I just wanted to know is it appropriate to keep old altar missals in your home? I would love to give these old books a good home.

I wasn’t just thinking because they have been used in the mass.

If they said that you could take them then it is ok to take them home with you.

So long as the person who told you that you could take it has the authority to say that (and I presume that’s the case), then by all means take them.

These are part of the patrimony of the Church. They’re historically significant. They need to be preserved for future generations.

It is better by far that you should take them home because now that they’ve been found, there’s a good chance that the wrong person might simply dispose of them. Once that happens, they cannot be recovered.

The one thing I would suggest is that if you don’t actually want them, or maybe after a while you won’t want them anymore, or won’t have space for them, please give them to someone who will keep them preserved for the future. I’d suggest a Catholic library, or the diocese archive. Just be sure to ask first because they might already have several copies. A library at a large Catholic university might have several, while a small one might not have any.

If it’s appropriate to keep old Bibles in your home, why would it be inappropriate to keep old Missals?
Speaking of old missals, that book you asked about in another thread is available at several university libraries in New England. Some have it in their regular stacks. If you have the ability to borrow from whatever college is close to you, they can do an inter-library loan.

It absolutely is.

But, if you ever don’t want them, give them to an EF parish or a diocese-an archive where they can be treasured

Missals are usually printed on high quality “bible” grade paper, designed to last many decades. You should be able to pass this on and read it many times
