Perhaps I am not using the search function properly because I can find no mention of the “Old Catholic Communion” or Old Catholic churches on the forums. As far as I can tell they are a heretical denomination that broke away hundreds of years ago and is not connected to the Catholic Church but walks, talks and acts like it and of course uses the name “Catholic” in a way that is decieving. There is one in my parent’s town and my mother’s friend went to one thinking that it was Catholic. The liturgy is almost the same. Married priests (possible women priests, nit sure) all denominations can come up for “communion” and they make claims of being based on the early church etc etc.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about them or has had any experiences with them. My mother asked me to look into it. The national organization is called the OCCNA.

Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that they split with the Church after Vatican I (over Papal Infallibility as I recall). Here is an article in the Catholic Encyclopedia about them.

The Old Catholic communion, yes…has married priests and allows women into the diaconate. They are indeed a heretical denomination, and have “relaxed views on contraception and abortion” (from what I’ve heard, so basically they are pro-death and pro-choice). They reject Papal Infallibility, and other essential doctrines of the church.

The “Old Catholics” are in full communion with the Anglican churches in the Anglican Communion. That gives a good insight into their teachings and doctrines. As for their name, they would have been more factual had they called themselves, on their formation, “New Protestants.”

Blessings,

Gerry

All I know is that everything you described is pretty much right on the money.

Wikiepedia says:

The Old Catholic Church is a Christian denomination originating with mainly German-speaking groups that split from the Holy See because they disagreed with the claim of universal papal jurisdiction and the solemn declaration of the doctrine of papal infallibility promulgated by the First Vatican Council (1871).The church is not in formal communion with the Holy See, though the Union of Utrecht of Old Catholic Churches is in full communion with the Anglican Communion and a member of the World Council of Churches.

I see no error in that description. Here is a link to the page:
