Today I went to a Latin old form Mass. I was shocked at how little speaking out loud the priest did during the Eucharist, raising of the vessels, etc. Is this typical?

Good link from Max above.

I also went to a Latin Mass today. Basically, it gives a sense of mystery and awe to the entire proceeding. Everything goes quiet as Christ descends from Heaven.

Thank you. It definitely teaches patience, something I’m not terribly good at. Think I like the new form better, but do appreciate the reverence of the old form.

Yes, this is typical of the Latin Mass. There is much more silence and room for quiet meditation in the Extraordinary form, I find.

I remember the first 5-10 times I experienced it, I really disliked it, and I felt like I didn’t know “what to do”. And my knees hurt from all the kneeling! But eventually I realized that the whole point is that you don’t have to be interacting back and forth with the priest in order to actively participate at Mass. Sometimes I follow every step of the mass in the Missal, but other times, it is best to just close the Missal, close your eyes, and meditate. “Active participation” in the Mass means uniting yourself with Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross.

THIS IS NOT MEANT AS CONDEMNATION FOR THE LATIN MASS

Participation by the faithful was not a big thing, instead they were witnesses…that’s why our pre-VII grandmas spent the mass praying the Rosary.

Yes, I would agree with you here that it does require patience. It’s still hard for me after having attended numerous times not to understand what’s being done. I think it is important then to rest in God and understand that He is present with you and to savor that.

The quiet is what was nice about the old Mass form. Some people would say the rosary during Mass, but not all. We had to pay close attention to see what the priest was doing so we could follow along in the missal.

yes, although the latin mass I attend they don’t seem to speak that quietly, it’s in a huge oratory.

I think the latin mass is truly beautiful and is the perfect way to honour God.

Yes. That why it used to be that one said that he/she was going to “hear Mass”.
