Wow, what a great discussion with respect and understanding!

Thank you everyone. šŸ‘

so we were all agreeing then? LOL…

:hypno:
I don’t think that is quite the case. Some will still shop at Old Navy, some won’t.

I think all who posted agree that we should support and love those who live with SSA, but Catholics should not support an active gay lifestyle. However, Old Navy supports active gay lifestyles by selling the gay pride shirts and giving some proceeds to a gay activist group.

Even though I didn’t shop much at Old Navy to begin with, I will no longer consider them as a shopping option in the future. Others disagree and said they would continue to shop there.

Thanks for the support, Juliane! ā¤ļø
It also makes me angry that the rainbow, which was GOD’S covenant with his people after the flood, has been usurped to stand for being gay! Sorry, I am NOT giving up the rainbow which belongs to Christians!!!

Take back the rainbow!

SwizzleStick, I think you are right that we should not support Old Navy in giving some proceeds to an active gay lifestyle group because that would be supporting mortal sin.

Ok… I see where you are coming from, but there is no reason to be angry when there was no malicious intent… that is what I worry about with petitions and such, you get a lot of very angry people, and that is where the hatefulness can seep in.

Juliane, not to say you are being hateful, but that anger can be dangerous when spread to a group mentality. I just worry about hate crimes, people screaming obscenities and slurs outside of Old Navy Stores, and the like… can we just keep it peaceful?

A dose of indignation and standing up for what you believe in can be a good and productive thing, but launching and anger driven campaign against an often persecuted group of people is another…

Ps - lots of good discussion here, a lot of really good points.

like whm, I would also be careful when telling children that it’s ok to be gay. this is a case where, unless you’re one of those flamboyant guys or butch ladies and it’s pretty obvious a mile away which way you swing, people can’t tell unless you’re advertizing it everywhere (shirts, pins, bumper stickers, whatever) or are clearly dating someone (pda). if the kids are young enough, they won’t be able to understand that the feeling is different than the action, because the people they see that openly support the feeling also - the vast majority of the time - support the action. and young children, not to mention many teens and adults, don’t realize that not only is it not having sex, it’s being in a relationship at all.

something phrased more along the lines of ā€œmost boys like girls, and most girls like boys, but there are some boys that like boys and some girls that like girls. that’s not how god intended families but we need to be nice to everyone, even if what they’re doing is wrong, because he made and loves everyone.ā€

as far as the original point, which is boycotting, I don’t believe that social boycotts on the corporate level really does anything. the economy is so intertwined, not to mention the fact that you wouldn’t be able to buy anything, because the vast majority of businesses support practices that in some way, shape, or form are against church teaching. for example, think about how you would boycott any place that sells condoms or has a pharmacy that fills bc pills. not only can you not go to the grocery store, you also can’t go to drugstores (rite aid, cvs) or gas stations - or any place that has a bathroom with one of those dispensers. it gets ridiculous pretty quickly.

that being said, if it’s no skin off your back to avoid a particular company (in this case it includes gap, banana republic, old navy, piperlime, and athleta), by all means have a go at it.

And while we are at it; can we take back the word ā€œgayā€? It’s a perfectly nice word, meaning happy…I’m not happy when I hear it now:(

YES! But thanks to the younger gen, that word now means ā€œstupid,ā€ or ā€œlame,ā€ as in ā€œthat’s so gay!ā€ I’d like to take it back but at least they’ve taken away the connection to homosexuality.

.
As with people praying outside abortion mills, it is the other side that will be slinging the hate, swearing and violence 99% of the time.

You have jumped from me expressing dismay (if I call that ā€œangerā€ what is the problem?) about gays appropriating a Christian covenant symbol to ā€œhate crimes, people screaming obscenities and slurs outside of Old Navy Stores?ā€

How do you even get from a boycott to an ā€œanger driven campaign against an often persecuted group of people?ā€ This has nothing to do with anyone who is gay or lesbian! It has to do with a business that advertises as being family-oriented and yet is promoting gay pride items in its stores, that is all.

I will not back down when the leap from what is actually being discussed to ā€œhate crimesā€ is worthy of an Olympic medal for distance.

Don’t you think that these days this group of people is receiving much more praise than persecution. Yes, I know there are still some people who do persecute them, which is just horrible but I think things are way better now.

My son (who has SSA) has received nothing but praise since junior high from everyone he meets.

Don’t you think that the group that is being persecuted the most now is Catholics. My dh and I go to the movies all the time and I cannot count how many times there have been scenes that persecute Catholics. I walked out on many of them. Not to mention all the protests at Catholic churches, and of course the news media has done it’s part.

Well, Jesus did say we would be persecuted.

Thanks to the OP for this information. However we decide to use this information, it’s good to know.

Personally, I agree with the OP. I also think that TheRealJulianne’s posts speak for me as well. šŸ‘

I suppose I just get worried that people will take it too far… there is no praise for being gay around here, but I know it is different in other parts of the country. People are really ugly and hateful about anybody who is ā€˜different’, whether that means gay, academic, not into sports, etc… and I forget that elsewhere, it is not like that, and that Catholics and Christians in general are in fact persecuted in other parts of the country.

We still have issues with backwoods gatherings of the KKK and stuff like that, so when I hear petition I get overly concerned.

Fair enough.

You’re right Meg, there has been a sad history of treating those with SSA in deplorable ways. I don’t think any of us are excusing that or calling for us to act like that. However, I think we are now seeing a backlash to other extreme.

Here are some examples of how children are being encouraged to consider and embrace the lifestyle in other parts of the country:

massresistance.org/media/video/brainwashing.html

There has been a public outcry over the use of the Camel cartoon in advertising cigarettes to children because of the link to cancer, and yet we are encouraging behaviors which are linked to a 400% increase in anal cancer as well as numerous other health and emotional disorders. 😦

being gay is linked to cancer? I’m sorry…I don’t get this one…

Homosexual activity specifically.

Throat cancer as well, Serap.
It’s pretty clear that engaging in high risk male homosexual activity isn’t the best way to prolong your life and remain healthy.

Having said that, it’s also clear you can’t say that being homosexual leads to all forms of cancers, viruses, Ebola outbreaks, nuclear wars, etc.
