Were there any old religious orders where nuns and monks lived in the same monastery. I am watching Sherlock Holms right now so it might be an angleican order because it is in london. They look like they are wearing the habit of St. Francis and they wear what look like beanies on their heads. The nuns wear the same as the monks except for the white head covering that most nuns wear. They do not have the veil. This has sparked my curiostiy and I want to know if there is an order or if it just the movie.

there are an order of Francisicans in the Anglicans Church, that was established by Anglo-Catholics in the 19th century who wanted to be closer to the Catholic way of life.

In Ireland there were joint monasteries where men occupied one building and women another. I know of no setting where it has been shown that men and women occupied the same buildings. In general the practice of sharing monastic grounds no longer exists although there are still monasteries that were started that way.

As Deacon Ed has said, joint monasteries went no further than a shared (though divided) church, with the two communities sharing a spiritual leader as well. One of the most prominent of these arrangements, though, was the Gilbertines, an English order that was somewhat popular there but did not expand to foreign territory.

There is a double Orthodox monastery in England, St. John the Baptist, but I can’t think of its location.

It was founded by the late Fr. Sophrony, who was a disciple of St. Silouan (Silvan), an elder of the Holy Mountain.
