In The Book of Job the phrase “Sons of God” is used for angelic or non-human beings (Jb 1:6; 2:1). In the New Testament “Sons of God” appears as a name for all who are born again into the family of God (Eph 3:14-15).

(There’s a whole gamut of varied interpretation for Genesis 6:))
Hmmmm… now I’ve got some digging to do. I’ll see what I can find. Thanks for the heads up.

As per usual - “You’re welcome.”😃
Could tell you about Genesis 6 but it would spoil your fun, “Teach a man to fish…etc.”👍 So I’ll show you respect and honour the fact you have the intelligence and competence to do it yourself:)

I am not sure one can really define “sons of G-d” in the bible. It maybe more about how we interoperate.

The comparison of Hebrew scripture and Greek cause some problems. Of course some of the older boos may have been written in a language b4 palio Hebrew just to make it harder.

I was told once Jews used to call spiritual leaders Sons of G-d.

G-d knows best

Despite not being God, I think “Sons of God” can best be iterpreted as representing ambitious, despotic and autocratic rulers who seize both women and power in an attempt to gain all the authority.

Not real sure of the descriptors but i am woe at english.
Yes what you say is a very reasonable interpretation and one of the well accepted versions.

Differing from the one the thread starter needed help with.

Bless ya pray well and stay well

You are mis-reading “sons of God” to be angels, I think.

The Sons of God are the sons of the righteous son of Adam, Seth. The daughters of humans are the daughters of the fallen son of Adam, Cain.
The designation “sons of God” is used several times in the Old Testament in reference to angels. One example is Daniel 3:25 where King Nebuchadnezzar looks into the furnace and sees four men “and the form of the fourth is like the son of God.” Another example is Job 38:7 which says the sons of God shouted for joy when God laid the foundations of the earth. This must refer to angels since man had not yet been created at that time. Also in Job 1 & 2 the sons of God presented themselves before the Lord in Heaven, Satan among them.

“Later Judaism and almost all the earliest ecclesiastical writers identify the ‘sons of God’ with the fallen angels; but from the 4th century onwards, as the idea of angelic natures became less material, the Fathers commonly take the ‘sons of God’ to be Seth’s descendants and the ‘daughters of men’ those of Cain.” (The Jerusalem Bible)

2 Peter 2:4 refers to angels that have sinned. Jude 6-7 says Sodom and Gomorrah indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural lust /strange flesh /other flesh *in the same *manner as the angels.

Do you agree with this, Kevin?

If you take this to be true then mixed marriages took place between Seth’s *male *descendants, the believers, and Cain’s *female *descendants, the unbelievers. Was this enough to make God so angry that He flooded the earth? Also when He decided to do this he found only one godly family among the human race - that of Noah. Where were all the other supposedly godly sons of Seth?

Hi all! Peace be with everyone! I have to say that I agree with Maria that The Holy Spirit, the creator, is the only giver of life. As Catholics we believe that all life, from the moment of its conception, is created by God. This would preclude et. al. any demonic authority or means of creation! God and God alone is the creator–The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. And, I have to vehemently declare to Kevin that the world Is NOT made richer by the existance of demons. My heavens! This is not a star war fantasy of dualism! This is serious! The existance of The evil one represents the perversion of the good things that God has created, and the good gifts He has given. Evil’s existance is the greatest sorrow to the heart of God! The immaculate heart of Mary is surrounded by thorns! How broken the heart of our God that evil exists and destroys His creation! It ultimately killed His only begotten Son on Holy and Great Friday! This is not a game! It is very serious! This conversation is not worthy of Catholic thinking! We are to be about the business of conversion and doing works of mercy and sacrifice—not being caught up in such discussions as this one! We are Catholics, we are not fundamentalists, this is Holy Lent, and come on! Let’s get in touch with the faith for crying out loud! This will be my last post on this topic—would someone like to discuss the glory of Easter and Pentecost and The Eucharist for a change?

This thread is about Angels doing weird things. I am sure there are other threads where you can discuss Easter etc.

God permits the continued existence of Satan as it is part of his overall plan. If there was no Satan there would not have been a need for Jesus to die for the sins of humanity.

Susan Maria,on the subject of angels my thoughts align with those of Pope John Paul 2. On July 23, 1986 he said “The angels are purely spiritual beings, created by God and given intelligence and free will. Through an immediate intuition of the truth, their intelligence grasps its object in a way that is much more complete than is possible for man…The world of the pure spirits is divided into good and bad ones. And this division has happened precisely as a result of their freedom to choose. God was present to their intelligence as the Supreme Good. He also wished to give them, through grace, a share in the mystery of His Divinity. The good angels have chosen God. But the others…have turned against God and the revelation of His grace. Their decision was inspired by a false sense of self-sufficiency, and it emerges as hatred and rebellion against God.”

Angels are purely spiritual beings who can at times appear in corporeal shape. In agreement with Scripture, and some of the mystics and saints of the Church.

Adam’s sin, O happy fault. That through his sin we might come to know the sweetness of Our Lord.

God permits sin. Through forgiveness He shows Himself to us a God of Mercy and Compassion.

“God in Christ has revealed the root of sin in us as self-crucifixion, and so enabled us to experience his forgiveness as the liberation which we enjoy anew each time we find the cross in our lives, identify with the crucified and so let the ego die. In this view, forgiveness equals liberation, and liberation powers the ongoing askesis. Thus the Christian life is simply the prolongation of God’s forgiveness of man in Christ” (Sebastian Moore, O.S.B.)

I agree. God gave us free will and wants us to voluntarily choose His way. This would not be possible without evil. Without evil how can we tell good?**

SusanMaria if you are interested in reading more on the Catholic viewpoint of angels a good book to try and get a copy of:

"Angels & devils", Joan Carroll Cruz, Tan Books & Publishers Inc., U.S.A., 1999. ISBN 0-89555-638-3

Tan - Orthodox Catholic

“Easy to read, Angels & devils covers a host of topics in an absorbing and informative manner. Among the many recent books about Angels, this has to be one of the very best.”
