I agree - when a mysterious being threatens us with eternal torture for every random transgression, the least we can do is wonder why that being is not bound by a similar moral code.
Patg:

Your profile shows you as being Catholic, but here you are agreeing against God with a self proclaimed “agnostic athiest”. Your choice, of course, but very confusing to me.

God is not a mysterious being. Maybe you just don’t know Him. He does not threaten us with eternal torture for ANY random transgression. God is Love, and everything He does is for love. We may not understand it, but niether do ants understand humans.

Ewald:]

There is an old saying that God meets man where he is at. The ancients were . . . well . . . rough. They saw their children and their women as property and anyone not of their nationality were peceived as not even being human. The fact that God instructed them not to beat their slaves to death was ground breaking bleeding heart liberalism back then.

Here is a new saying, man interprets God’s instructions in the context of his current reality, and sometimes God’s instructions lose something in the translation.

The upshot is, don’t worry about how Israel lived out their religion. Don’t worry about how the medieval Christians lived out their faith. When you read in your Bible and it says “what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8) you need to live that out in todays understanding just as Micah’s audience lived it out in terms of their time.
As St. Paul says, the Law is a teacher. It is only by God’s grace that we can go beyond the Law and fulfill its precepts. The pagan can be modest, but he cannot be humble, and most of us are not better than good pagans. Love your enemies. How impossible. Yet with God all things are possible.

Wondering about the mysteries of God is called theology and it is not all that bad. It can be confusing though.
God is not a mysterious being.
Really? I think mankind has been struggling with the nature and mysteries of God since the beginning of time.
Maybe you just don’t know Him.
I don’t think any of us really do
He does not threaten us with eternal torture for ANY random transgression.
No, probably not (except for all the rules in Leviticus which we totally ignore). But the humans left in charge of the Church do quite well at threatnening etenal torture for an endless array of things.
God is Love, and everything He does is for love.
I doubt the innocent Egyptian children would agree.
We may not understand it, but niether do ants understand humans.
But then the ants weren’t made in God’s image and likeness. We don’t “know” that God is Love, all we know for sure is that God is infinitely more powerful than us and that doesn’t necessarily make God all loving. Again, ask the Egyptians, or the innocent victims of the flood, or the Jews in the holocaust…

You claim to be Catholic but clearly you do not belong to the same Church I do. A random transgression does not land you in hell. Willful sin will result one’s damnation, but you make it sound like any accidental infraction will do the job.
I doubt the innocent Egyptian children would agree.
Then they would be wrong.

And we do know that God is love, the Bible says so very clearly and the Church says so very clearly, and on a daily basis God proves it very clearly.

In a war is it acceptable to kill children? If such action was taken by another country how would we look upon the plagues of egypt? We use our own standards, the standards of man to deem him good. Then why can we not use the same standards to judge god?
We’re not worthy to judge God. We are God’s creation and he has a reason for doing everything that he does. When evil is spread from generation to generation, this is God’s way of taking care of it. There wasn’t any righteousness left in Sodom and Gomorrah besides Lot and his family and God destroyed the two cities. God promised he would not destroy the cities if 10 righteous people could were living in the cities. There wasn’t even 10 people. Jericho should have learned from this but its inhabitants continued to live in sin. Again, God took care of the problem.

I aknowledge reading your post. Other than that, the assertions you make do not dignify a response.

One cannot have an reasonable discussion with someone who promotes vulgarity and lies. Good day.
How about the assertions that sam harris made?

First of all, God gave the Egyptians several chances to let the Hebrews go. Pharaoh had nine chances before God killed the first born sons. Therefore the last plague was really brought on by Pharaoh because he would have in turned retaliated against the Hebrews and killed their children. You can look at it as more of God defending the Hebrews. As far as the innocent victims of the flood goes, God had his reasons again. He was sad at how evil the world had become and this was his way of taking care of it.

Your response about the Jews in the Holocaust doesn’t carry any weight what so ever. The Holocaust was the result of a very wicked man and his henchmen. Hitler was not commanded by God to kill the Jews. He was a sick, evil man. God gave us free will and Hitler chose to sin.

Judge God?

Judge GOD?

Who are we to judge God? I recommend you read Job 38 - 42.
We are humans, and humans continually deem something right or wrong. How do we not determine if something/someone is right or wrong if we do not judge it/them by their actions?

If we were not to judge god he must be deemed neutral, for if we cannot judge him as wrong we cannot judge him as right.

I judge god on a negative light for his position on slavery. If you care to go to the bottom of page one you will see a large quote from sam harris that adresses the issue.

I think you have two options here:

  1. *]The standard that the end does not justify the means does not apply to God. This is evident throughout the O.T. **if **one assumes that God is actually responsible for the dreadful acts. This seems to go against one’s sensibilities quite a bit.
*]The authors were intent on justifying the actions of their group by writing stories in which God was presented as causing or ordering the acts. This is quite understandable as it is still being used today by extremist groups to justify themselves. Of course, those who insist on some extreme type of scriptural inerrancy won’t like this theory but it does seem quite reasonable.

  1. Agreed. But the problem with that you highlight in your last line. If one part can be so heavily edited/influenced by men, how do we know when god is truely inspiring them? Has he ever?

Isn’t there a biblical quote that says God is love? So in a sense you can proclaim this to be true in the sense that your first like indicated that we are made in the image and likeness of god? I have asked this in a response to another of your posts but in a different way.

How do we know the bible is the word of god? Please don’t tell me the only reasons we have is because it says so, I personally feel it to be true and the church says so. Because that is the only ones I can think off, but there has to be a good reason though yea. Because there is no way so many people believe in holy books unless there was a good reason.

You should study for yourself what the OT says about slavery. First off it was a temporary situation, not a life long condition. Every seven years they were freed during the jubilee. Second, they could redeem themselves. There was even rules about what to do if a slave’s service came to an end but he/she did not want to leave their master. So you cannot equate being a slave in Israel with being a slave in Alabama.

More importantly you cannot judge ancient cultures by today’s standards.

But even more important than that, for finite man to judge infinite God, is absurd in the extreme.

Isn’t that called terrorism?

Change god to either of Hamas, Tamil Tigers, IRA.

and egypt/pharaoh to Isreal, Srilanka, Britan.

“one man’s freedom fighter is another mans terrorist” - Unknown

Have you read Exodus? The Egyptians enslaved the Hebrews for 400 years. The Egyptians were the ones using Genocide. Pharaoh didn’t want the Hebrews “over-populating” so he worked them extremely hard to kill them off. That didn’t work. He then decided to kill all the newborn hebrew males by drowning them in the Nile. God heard the crys of Israel for over 400 years. It was time to free them from bondage.

Like I said, for God it appears that the end always justifies the means.

I don’t have an answer for that but I do find it untenable to believe that not one of the hundreds of writers and copiers adjusted events a little to make their side look better. Maybe that was God’s inspiration and maybe it wasn’t. The theism of the Jews showed God’s direct involvement in everything and that belief is reflected in their writings.

The theism of Catholics also shows God’s direct involvement in everything.

We only have faith to allow us to believe any of that is true. There are plenty of examples which lead one to question it. Even the bible questions it, such as the book of Job.

Purely faith.

Once it did. Now the Church recognizes that there are many natural explanations for all the things that were once thought of as direct interventions of God.
