We are exempt from some of the laws in the Old Testament, right? I don’t know if exempt is the right word, but they don’t apply any longer. I’m just curious how we know which restrictions we no longer have to adhere to. I don’t think i’ve ever heard it specifically listed or anything.

Hmm. Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but there have been specific decisions by the Church at different times which have addressed the obligation of Christians to the Law. The most dramatic was the Council of Jerusalem, which is reported in Acts 15. At this time the specific question had to do with the conversion of Gentiles, and whether Gentile Christians had to submit to all of Jewish Law (beginning with, did they have to be circumcised before they could be baptised, and then did they have to observe all the dietary laws, etc, after baptism). The Council determined that they only needed to be held to the prohibitions against idolatry, unlawful marriage, and the consumption of blood.

Later decisions addressed such issues as moving the Sabbath observance to Sunday.

There’s no specific list. Following Church teaching should keep us faithful to the witness preserved in Scripture.

the difference is instead of repent and kill a goat now you only have to repent.

From my casual (and often forgetful) study of scripture, I think the idea is that the Law is needed by those who dont’ have a real clue about how to have a relationship with God.

In the NT, the essential matters of what a covental relationship with God involves, certainly not a list of taboos and customs that take the place of a meaningful and loving relationship with God and a unquenched desire to live in accordance with the rules of the new covenant.
