Old Testament prophets

Hi,

I was looking for a definitive list of classical Old Testament prophets, specifically, the first, the last and the greatest?
Sorry if this has been covered in a previous post.

I think the greatest is Elijah. He is my patron. I love Elijah he’s just awesome!👍
 
Are you asking in a subjective sense, or are you asking if it is possible to know objectively who was the first prophet, the last, and the greatest?
 
In a synagogue school it was known that the final exam always asked the student to list the Kings of Judea.

One year they changed it and asked the student to list the major and minor prophets. Lacking an answer one inventive student responded: “Who am I to judge which prophets were major and which were minor. Only G-d knows that. Therefore, I will list the Kings of Judea.”

I suspect that many of our politicians are very familiar with this incident. 😃
 
Well…

Major prophets are:
Daniel - Isaiah - Jeremiah - Ezekiel

Minor prophets are those last 12 of the Old Testament
Malachi, Micah, and the gang.

Moses was a prophet, as well as Elijah and Elisha.

I’d also include John the Baptist.

I’d be hard-pressed to come up with 1 or 2 more than that. However, the actual list is far more than that, for (I believe it’s) 2nd kings says that Elijah had many followers who were prophets. And at one time, Jezebel had managed to kill all the prophets of Israel except for Elijah.
 
We should also include the prophets from the Books of Samuel and Kings–these books are called by the Jews the “Former Prophets”. Samuel seems to be the first named prophet, especially from his experience of being called in 1 Samuel 3, when “the word of the LORD was scarce and vision infrequent.” We would also include Elijah, Elisha, and others like Gad and Nathan, and Hulda.

And then there is Joseph, who certainly had some of the qualities of a prophet. And Moses, who by all accounts was a prophet. Even Miriam is called a prophet in Exodus 15:20. Judges 4 has Deborah as judge of Israel, and prophet (4:4).

So, who was the first prophet? Moses, or even Joseph the patriarch.

Who was the greatest prophet? Moses, or perhaps Elijah.

Who was the final prophet? We don’t know. Malachi is the last in the bible, but we don’t really know the prophet’s name, or even gender.

First prophet: Abraham
Last: Malachi
Greatest: Moses

Since all the prophets led up to the coming of the Messiah, it would seem that John the Baptist was the last.
