It has been about 50 years since I played Rummy. I am relearning. What fun.
I never did really learn how to play Poker right…with the bidding and all.

What are some favorite card games for you?

i don’t touch playing cards. the deck contains a suicide king.

Solitaire! That’s the one I play most often. Double Solitaire can be played with two people and two decks of cards. But since I’m usually alone, I find the single form plenty satisfying.

One card came I could never understand is Pinochle.

Do the kings and queens represent historical people? Who was the king of hearts?

this is going way off topic. Google is your friend my friend.

The trouble with many card games, including poker, is that they’re not much fun unless all the players are pretty much as good as each other. In our family we find canasta is a good game, because luck and skill are more or less evenly balanced. Nobody wins all the time and nobody loses all the time.

I did google for it and this is what it says:

The king of hearts is sometimes called the “suicide king” because he appears to be sticking his sword into his head. This is a result of centuries of bad copying by English card makers where the king’s axe head has disappeared.

What silly childish nonsense. I thought for a moment you had some interesting information to
share.

Anyone ever play whist? Me, neither…would like to learn it!

I’ve always enjoyed card games…solitaire (many varieties), pinochle, Trump, canasta, poker. I’ve never played bridge but my parents did.

Some of my best college memories was playing Trump until 4:00am and going to classes the next day…barely! 😂

That’s the game I used to play as a kid, with my parents and aunts. Never played it again since. I think it went out of fashion. It’s bridge without the betting, you just count the tricks. I never learned to play bridge.

I only hear it mentioned in some historical context. It did seem to be all the rage in the 18th century! 😂

@Soubirous, my friend, I have good news for you. Charles VII did not commit suicide. It’s true that he died a singularly unpleasant death: because of an abscess in his mouth, he was unable to swallow either food or water, and eventually he died of starvation. But he is innocent of suicide. You have nothing to fear from a deck of cards.

Growing up, occasionally my aunt and uncle would come to visit for the weekend. Saturday was special… a day of shopping, then a nice dinner (including peanut butter ice cream my uncle would bring from Johnstown.) Then, from maybe 7PM until maybe 3AM, pinochle. Aunt and mom vs dad and uncle. That’s where I learned pinochle, as sometimes, I’d sub for one or another player.

I hold those memories in a very special place, so pinochle has a special meaning for me.

During early work days, it was possible to scare up enough people for pinochle or bridge during lunch.

Those 2 are still my go to card games.

We have friends that we like to play variations of Rummy with. They’ve tried to teach us Pinochle but it doesn’t stick.
