ACLU defends polygamy
Legal group backs ‘freedom of choice’​

The president of the American Civil Liberties Union says polygamy is among the “fundamental rights” that her organization will continue to defend.

During a question-and-answer session after a speech at Yale University, ACLU president Nadine Strossen stated that her organization has “defended the right of individuals to engage in polygamy,” reported AgapePress, noting that the comments cited by the Yale Daily News received little attention.

The student paper said Strossen was responding to a “student’s question about gay marriage, bigamy, and polygamy.” The ACLU chief said her organization defends “the freedom of choice for mature, consenting individuals,” making it “the guardian of liberty … defend[ing] the fundamental rights of all people.”

I brought this older article up because I have a question pertaining to it. If the ACLU were to become sucessful in getting polygamy legalized in the US, would the LDS church change its doctrine again? Seriously…

As a lurker on a LDS forum, this question was brought up and even mentioned that a few leaders thought that the practice of polygamy could be re-instituted.

To my surprise the overall thought of the LDS posters is that the practice of polygamy would not be re-instituted since it would have to 1)be a revelation from Heavenly Father and 2) that there shouldn’t be a need at this point to re-institute it besides the fact that our society condones the practice and 3) their spouses would need to be accepting of the practice as well (most of them reflected that would be an emphatic - NO !!!)

Most LDS view the polygamy issue as part of the past and that they will not have to deal with it since they don’t foresee it being re-instituted in their lifetime. In the next millenium yes, in the current times NO!!!

As a lurker over there, I’ve been impressed at how the polygamy issue is a non issue in their eyes.

I think not. It would be too inconsistent with prior revelations made on the issue. I think the bigger issue is the split between the LDS church and Fundamentalist LDS Church that never accepted the ban on polygamy. A change in law to allow polygamous marriage would vindicate the primary reason for their split from the main body of the Church. It may even attract many fundamentalist mormon sympathizers to leave the mainline LDS church for the FLDS church. But, of course, this is just speculation on my part.

I don’t see how “their spouses would need to be accepting of the practice” would differ than it did when Joseph Smith instituted it. I would think that it would be even easier this day in age.

It states in the BOM that it could be re-instituted at any point. It’s part of their history but I get the impression that there would need to be a logical reason why God would want to re-instute polygamy that each member could confirm with the Holy Ghost.

The issue would challenge their faith like Abrahams test in sacrificing Isaac. They mostly believe it will not happen in their lifetime and is a moot point.
