Oldest Catholic Church in America?

When I came across pictures of this beautiful old church I had to share them! Not quite sure if this is the oldest Catholic Church in America or not but it’s certainly one of them. It’s St. Ignatius Church in St. Inigoes, Maryland. Sadly I don’t think it’s used much anymore.

Imagine Sunday High Mass and all the chant and incense that used to fill this place. :highprayer: Beautiful, and truly traditional!
 
Beautiful old church. Its got to be a real chore getting to communion, and noisy too, what with all of those pew gates opening and shutting.

Its bad enough today with people dropping the kneelers, let alone opening and shutting pew gates.

But a nice looking old church.

The exterior has a kind of protestant look to it. Still nice looking anyway.
 
That is an awesome church. I would love to worship in a place like that. Thanks for posting these pictures. 😃

Thanks for posting those pictures. I love those upstairs pews. Very cool. For me, the smallest churches are the nicest. I love the intimacy of a small space.
 
How about this one? St. Mary’s Mission in Stevensville, MT, founded in 1841 by Jesuit Fr. Pierre-Jean DeSmet and Fr. Anthony Ravalli as a mission to the Flathead Indians. saintmarysmission.org/

This is my parish…kinda. My wife is Dominican and I have been to mass at this cathedral on numerous occasions. I know the Rector Emeritus very well. He’s actually Cuban, but has been in the DR for decades.
 
Here is the oldest mission church in the Seattle Archdiocese. First built in 1838; it burned down 3 times and was rebuilt 3 times (St Francis Xavier Mission). Last rebuild was in 1932.👍
 
Sorry I didn’t upload correctly. We’ll see if I got it this time. Hoping to add two more pictures. At the time these were taken the parish offered a once a month Dominican Rite Mass and then swapped over to a once a month EF Mass plus, of course, a weekly OF Mass. This is why you see the use of the OF altar for all Masses. We did the best we could to accomodate everyone.

A Byzantine wedding will be held here on Jan 3, 2015.

I love this church. Any pictures of the choir loft from down below? 😛
 
I’ll get a few pictures of the loft this weekend. Its pretty plain; the old organ was scrapped and there is no one that can play one anywhere around. Best they can do now is a keyboard played by a young gal. Better than nothing I suppose. Although we did have a pretty nice a capella choir a couple of years ago. But it broke up what with people moving and “old age” setting in.
