Omitting the Gloria

This is only my second Advent as a Catholic, and since I cannot remember last year AT ALL, I’m turning to all of you with this question.

We did not sing/say the Gloria this morning at Mass. Is this nornal for Advent? Does the morning’s Advent rite replace it? We attend a very orthodox parish so I cannot imagine our prest just skipping it, although I suppose he could be having a forgetful morning!

The Gloria is not said durring Advent and Lent, due to the penitential nature of the two seasons. Advent is a minor penitential season, we prepare for the 2nd coming and the memorial of Christ’s first coming. So there is also a sense of joy, which is why the alleluia is said at the gospel acclimation durring Advent; but not durring Lent. The only time the Gloria will be said durring these two seasons is on a Solemnity, which durring Advent is The Immaculate Conception, December 8th.
 
Yes, the Gloria is omitted during Advent. I’m not sure what you mean by the Advent rite, though. Do you mean the lighting of the advent candle, or was there something else your congregation did?

Before Mass began this morning the cantor explained that as this Advent, we do not sing or recite the Gloria. I thought that was nice, since there are always new or returning Catholics who may not remember or know.
 
Thanks, I remembered the omission during Lent, but totally forgot that Advent is a penetential season as well.

Our priest referred to lighting the candle as a “rite” this morning. I’ve never heard it referred that way before, and I guess no one else has either!

the Gloria is not said or sung during Advent and Lent. If there is a blessing of the advent wreath it may replace the entrance rite, or it may be done after the intercessions. If the blessing of the Advent wreath includes a sprinkling rite (where the people are blessed) this replaces the penitential rite.

Yes, it was the first mass of the day, but the candle would have lit for the Vigil the night before. So not the first time the candle was lit for the season, but Father definitely referred to it as a “rite” since he wanted to point out we wouldn’t find it in our missals. (We started using missals from a new company this season.)
