going on a cruise from June 11–18, 2011. Will have second day of a Sunday. No Catholic Mass available. What would you do, to fulfill obligation?🤷
…why…that is easy…take a priest with you!!!👍

…for a lot of folk this is a regular thing, so they pray the rosary and say their daily prayers. You could put aside some extra time and perhaps meditate on the liturgy of the day.

I was on a costa cruise recently, and they had an almost daily Mass, and it seemed popular. There was a small chapel and for Sunday’s they held it in one of the larger rooms.

This is a real problem for those working onboard, particulaarily cargo ships which mightn’t see ports for weeks!! It’s difficult on ones spiritual welfare.

Enjoy your cruise and bon voyage!! 🙂

My pastor is going on a cruise this month, maybe you will end up on the same ship as he is on. 👍

I would argue that planning a vacation without taking into consideration God, that is your Sunday Obligation, does not negate that Obligation. No one makes a person book a vacation where they can not go to Mass. So doing so does not make it okay to miss, one still needs a dispensation otherwise it is a mortal sin to miss.
That’s always what I thought as well …

I have a similar question…

my mom and I might be going on a trip this summer somewhere where there are no Cathoilc churches. I will only know 3 days in advance before we go, I don’t know when. A choice was given to me whether I would go to this trip or not, and I chose to… did I sin by this, since i know there won’t be Catholic churches? however the purpose of the trip, for me, is to visit my grandmother who is in her 80s and who I haven’t seen for many years. Should I get a dispensation from the pastor of my local parish? and how does a dispensation work, what is it?

Well, it looks like I’m going to miss mass this week.

I’m going on cruise and our only day on land will be Saturday 8 AM - 5PM. So no vigil mass there and I’m pretty sure there won’t be any mass on the ship either.

I guess I will pray the Liturgy of the Hours.
We went on a cruise once and asked for a dispensation because of the same issues. When we got on board we discovered that a group went on cruise together and brought a priest with them who would say Mass at 5:00 on Saturday afternoon.

You might be surprised what you find on these ships.

Of course not!

That would be exciting! I’m going to ask when I get on board.

Can. 1248 §1 The obligation of assisting at Mass is satisfied wherever Mass is celebrated in a catholic rite either on a holyday itself or on the evening of the previous day.
§2 If it is impossible to assist at a eucharistic celebration, either because no sacred minister is available or for some other grave reason, the faithful are strongly recommended to take part in a liturgy of the Word, if there be such in the parish church or some other sacred place, which is celebrated in accordance with the provisions laid down by the diocesan Bishop; or to spend an appropriate time in prayer, whether personally or as a family or, as occasion presents, in a group of families.

That may not help because the ship will consider it a “private party”, but another Catholic may mention it at dinner at your table in the formal dining room, or an announcement may be made about twenty minutes before the Mass, so keep your ears open.

It happened to me on a cruise… the so called mass turned out to be a protestant service… I went back to my cabin and found a mass on TV… no communion but it helped to attend via television.

Ha ha. I’ll keep my ears opened.

If there is a Protestant service, I’m going to attend.

I will be going on a short vacation near the end of June, and have located a church to attend Mass on Sunday morning.

I will be in England just after Xmas, and will have the chance to attend Mass in Manchester at the Hidden Gem (St Mary’s) on New Year’s day, and will be attending with one of my best friends who is also Catholic.

I was on a cruise Holy Week (my school planned Spring Break that week) and to my surprise, there was a priest on board. He gave Mass in the theater. There was a chapel, but there were Jewish services running at the same time. It was nice. The Good Friday service he did was well done. My only thing was that we had Easter Sunday Mass at 5 pm Saturday (before Mass he said pray for Pope Benedict who has a kink in his arm after all the arm twisting it took for him to allow this Mass). That was peculiar.

Anyways, the priest mentioned a ministry that serves boats and cruise ships and sends out priests on the boats to perform Mass. It isn’t something the cruise line does, its a ministry. You might try to look it up.

My grandfather went on a Celebrity cruise a few months ago and there was a priest on board also.

The cruise I went on was with Royal Caribbean.

The ministry (I forgot what it was called) may be something worth looking up.

Just so you know: Most, if not all, cruise ships have nondenominational chapels. They are usually in the top floor. You can look them up in the map of the ship.

So I just came back from my cruise. It was great!

No Mass, no priest and believe it or not, no chapel.

I was really surprised that there wasn’t at least a chapel.

So on Sunday, I just prayed the Liturgy of the Hours, read my Bible and listened to a couple of EWTN homily podcasts.
