I’m going onto an on call rota with work, starting this weekend. I will be required to always have the mobile phone switched on, and to be able to respond to a call out immediately. My question is, what should I do about attending mass on Sunday? My local church rightly bans mobile phones (they should at least be turned off), and I wouldn’t be able to respond to a call out in time if I received one whilst at mass anyway? I’m not happy about going on this rota but I didn’t have a choice unfortunately.

Can’t you put your phone on vibrate, sit near a door, and step out if you get an emergency call? Physicians on call do this and everyone understands.

^^^This. Phone on vibrate, put it in a shirt pocket where you’ll feel it, and sit on the back pew.

For a few years our organist was also the only anesthetist in town. Our hospitals still assigns pagers and it wasn’t rare for his to go off in the middle of Mass leaving us to sing the rest of the Mass a capella.

Hi,
I too am on call at times. I put my phone on vibrate and sit where i can pop out and not disturb anyone. I also pray to our Lord that I don’t receive any calls when I am at Mass.

God Bless
Mark
