Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer

On this festive solemnity of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God body and soul into Heaven our spiritual joy and fraternal rejoicing is great indeed:
Beneath Her mantle and on this occasion of Her solemn feast, today, 15 August, 2012, our community, The Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer, has been granted canonical recognition as a Clerical Institute of Diocesan Right by His Lordship the Right Reverend Dom Hugh Gilbert, O.S.B., Bishop of Aberdeen.

We invite you to rejoice with us on this solemn feast of Our Lady through Whose Perpetual Succour, we have received a great favour from Our Lord.

We also announce the community’s public profession of vows that will take place in Our Lady’s Chapel (at the head of the pier) Stronsay, on 22 August, feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary at 18.15 (6.15 p.m.).

The profession will be celebrated by His Lordship, the Right Reverend Dom Hugh Gilbert, O.S.B., Bishop of Aberdeen.

The congregation was erected as Transalpine Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (C.SS.R.) 2 August 1988 by Father Michael Mary Sim C.SS.R. as a traditionalist Catholic Redemptorist religious community affiliated with Society of St. Pius X, and were called the Transalpine Redemptorists. The previous year, 3 December 1987 Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre had officially blessed the undertaking of the foundation.

Originally based at the Monastery of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, they moved to the Mother of Perpetual Succour Monastery in Joinville, France in 1994 until they bought the island of Papa Stronsay on 31 May 1999.[citation needed]

There they established the Golgotha Monastery, and publish The Catholic, a monthly since 1982. In the past they promoted their own version of a Redemptorist Purgatorian Confraternity. [2]

In July 2007 the institute established a second monastery in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand.

In June 2008, the community petitioned the Holy See for reconciliation and this was accepted by Pope Benedict XVI who declared them in “canonical good standing” within the Catholic Church[3]. Most of the members accepted the move, while a remnant continue to be affiliated with the SSPX. However, they are not “canonically erected” and thus their faculties for celebrating the Extraordinary form of the Mass are restricted to the islands of Papa Stronsay and Stronsay.[4] In 2010, plans to celebrate this form of the Mass in the pre-Reformation St Magnus Cathedral in Kirwall were rejected by Bishop Peter Moran the then bishop of the Diocese of Aberdeen.[5] In an July 2009 interview, Fr. Michael Mary described their current position being “still in no man’s land”.[6
