He left a letter saying I believe that “since ‘nothing unclean enters Heaven,’ I could probably stand some purification before standing in the presence of the eternal God. During that process, I’m going to need prayers.”

“’‘So I don’t want you to canonize me. I want you to pray for me.’”

I tell my family this…" If I die dont say Im in heaven since you never know, if you assume Im in heaven you may not pray for me, and believe me if I die you I am going to need your prayers."

Indeed. Unlike on earth, the souls in Purgatory cannot help themselves in any way anymore, they can only suffer. The right thing to do is pray for them.

‘Blessed Souls, I have prayed for thee; I entreat thee, who are so dear to God, and who are secure of never losing Him, to pray for me a miserable sinner, who is in danger of being damned, and of losing God forever. Amen.’ - St Alphonsus Liguori

I never get it when these saints refer to themselves as miserable sinners, but perhaps it is scruples or just extreme humility. One doesn’t know the actual thoughts or sins anyone might have had, I guess.

I think it is because they recognize that they are holy because of God’s grace and that on their own they would be quite bad.

The way I figured it, is they are so much closer to God than me, the least of my sins would horrify them.

I can relate to that. If I didn’t have God, I don’t even want to think where I’d be or what I’d be doing. Probably getting dead drunk and hooking up to be honest.

well even St Paul who was called ‘the Holy One’ and who could resurrect the dead said he was working his salvation in fear and trembling.

St. Paul had committed serious sins of murder before he converted, so I sort of understand.
But somebody like St. Bernadette Soubirous who never did much of anything bad is harder to understand when she gets calling herself a sinner.

Maybe being closer to God they are more aware of their imperfections. Jesus calls us to be perfect.
