“On this rock – this revelation – I will build my church…”

That’s what I heard a Prot preacher say on the radio yesterday. I’ve read the Prot. point of view (i.e., translation) on this passage, but never *heard *it.
Weak.
Laughable.

Don’t be so quick to judge:

**424 **Moved by the grace of the Holy Spirit and drawn by the Father, we believe in Jesus and confess: 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. On the rock of this faith confessed by St. Peter, Christ built his Church.

We simply don’t interpret it this way to the exclusion of the other verses.
CCC #552/881.
Our task is to show them the following:

1. Theirs is not the exclusive interpretation
2. The Keys to the Kingdom are an echo of Isaiah 22:22, and Jesus has established a Prime Minister of His Davidic Kingdom while He’s away in the person of Peter.
3. There’s one shephard and one flock, and Jesus tells Peter to “Feed them, Tend them, Feed them” while He’s away.

That is not the only protestant interpretation.

I even had one person say that Jesus pointed to Peter when He said “You are rock…” and to HIMSELF when He said, “and on THIS rock I will build my church.”

The other main interp. is that “rock” means “faith”, which of course refutes the claim that Jesus Himself is the “rock.” But this is not considered contradiction, as long as it doesn’t single out Peter for special honors.

In other words, hearing one interpretation from one protestant does not mean it is the definitive answer.

That 's why I love The Church.

This is because very many prots think that Peter was a bumbling idiot. They try to deny this passage, instead they focus on John and Paul and leave Peter out. What a shame that they don’t get to see the side of Peter that we do…The rock…the steadfast and faithful one that Jesus trusted with his kingdom on earth.
