One of our catechist, who is a convert, still hangs onto the Protestant belief of "once saved, always saved. When challenged she provide a lot of on-line Protestant information. Where can I find Catholic information to refute this?

Check out these tracts on Catholic Answers. “Salvation”

Here are two more articles for you, Joan:

bringyou.to/apologetics/a45.htm

bringyou.to/apologetics/a129.htm

Do you know if she is teaching adults and/or children this? If so, then your pastor must be made aware of her remaining Protestant notions that infect her teaching.

The bigger issue here is… This person SHOULD NOT be teaching catechism. I would immediately talk to your DRE or pastor.

Make the effort to read the Scriptures to find out what God says.

In Galatians 5:4 God tells us that some Christians in Galatia were severed from Christ. These people weren’t OSAS.

You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. Galatians 5:4

St. Augustine, Predestination of the Saints, Bk II, ch. 1:
“I assert, therefore, that the perseverance by which we persevere in Christ even to the end is the gift of God; and I call that the end by which is finished that life wherein alone there is peril of falling. Therefore it is uncertain whether any one has received this gift so long as he is still alive. For if he fall before he dies, he is, of course, said not to have persevered; and most truly is it said. …For if any one have … faith, and fall away, he is rightly said to have had these virtues and to have them no longer; for he was…righteous…he was believing, as long as he was so; but when he ceased to be so, he no longer is what he was.”
According to the Council of Trent:
If anyone shall say that he will for certain with an absolute and infallible certainty have that great gift of perseverance up to the end, unless he shall have learned this by a special revelation: let him be anathema (canon 16, Council of Trent canons on justification)

The one question to ask is this:

“If I my salvation is guaranteed, what happens if I then decide to stop believing in God?”

The only answer is that you won’t. Well, why not? Is free will taken away when one is “saved”? Very unbiblical, and of course the answer is no.

And, of course, there are the biblical warnings against Apostasy.

How can Apostasy happen at all if OSAS???

Just give her a Bible and ask her where OSAS can be found in it. The truth is that OSAS is nowhere to be found in the Bible.

We are “to work out our salvation in fear and trembling” according to St. Paul. Salvation is a lifelong process not a “one shot deal.”

(Edited)

In addition to the hundreds of scripture verses that contradict OSAS we have the undeniable reality of free will - that can change at anytime up to the last moment of death:

The final proof…
“We have nothing of our own but our will.** It is the only thing which God has so placed in our own power that we can make an offering of it to Him**.” St John Vianney (The Curé d’Ars – 1786-1859)

If God didn’t want us to be able to choose He would not have given us the gift of freewill. It is this gift which places us above the animals. It is this gift which allows us to choose to either worship God or not worship God. It is this gift, and only this gift, which allows us to truly love Him as a child loves its father. It is this gift which proves that ‘once saved, always saved’ must be wrong.

If we are saved in spite of ourselves then there is no freewill. If there is no freewill then the Bible is wrong!

Read scriptures to find out what God says?

Ho-boy Emerald - here we go again. Don’t you ever give it up on your OSAS fundamentalism? We have defeated the OSAS arguments a thousands times: Protestants who accept OSAS: How do you explain these scriptures?

What you really mean here is: read scriptures while wearing your fundamentalist lenses and in your scrupolous mind imagine what Emerald and Luther say in their private and heretical revelations.

I don’t believe in OSAS, if you read my post properly you would have known this.

Well I apologize if that is now the case. When did you finally come to your senses since it seems you were not long ago defending it rigorously.

Alaileula bro if you finally came around.

The Catechism. Also logic, like here:

Judas and Peter were both of Jesus’ Apostles. They both sinned against Jesus: Peter denied Him three times and Judas betrayed Him. Both Apostles repented. However only Peter accepted God’s Mercy. Judas despaired and committed suicide. Judas is now in Hell, because he committed the unforgiveable sin. Now, if “once saved, always saved” was true, than why is Judas in Hell?

One of the very best Bible studies on this error is a free MP3 download from John Martignoni.
Once Saved, Always Saved? Learn how to defend against this false and dangerous doctrine
The notes for it are here.

One good idea is to download it, listen to it, and then burn copies onto CDs to give to everyone interested. I would approach this by saying something like, “I was concerned about whether this was actually a Catholic teaching because I know not even all Protestants believe it so I did some research and this is what I found.” 👍

I would also suggest a quiet talk with your pastor and/or DRE and provide them with the documentation she is using and a copy of John’s CD as well.

You cannot use that because no one knows Judas’ final end. Such speculation is fruitless. The Catechism states:
1864 “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can
lead to final impenitence and eternal lossEven in Judas’ case, we cannot be sure.

It is far better to refute such things with scripture and actual church teaching.

The Church doesn’t claim to know about whether or not people are in Hell, but what qualifications are for damnation are.

This is not true, I have not been defending OSAS in this forum.

You must be confused or there’s someone else on this forum called emeraldisle??

A person is saved when they are in Christ, salvation is only found in Christ.

The people Paul referred to in his letter to the Galatians were severed from Christ for seeking to be justified by the law. They were trying to earn there salvation and so they were severed from Christ. When they were severed from Christ they lost the salvation that they had which is only found in Christ.

You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. Galatians 5:4

I have a word file with over sixty passages of scripture that show the teaching of OSAS to be a falsehood. If you’re interested, send me a PM with your email address, and I will send you the file. I will also send a bonus file that refutes the two main passages used by OSAS believers to support their doctrine.
