I recently made a post on another discussion forum that had to do with the Christians there posting [to the Atheists/Muslims] that they can’t wait to see them burn in hell etc. In my post I said it was offensive to me as a Christian but also a perversion of the Christian Gospel. I went on to say that it’s also supreme arrogance, as you cannot 100% say you are going to Heaven.

The proverbial stuff hit the proverbial fan.

Aside from the usual “Catholicism is all a perversion of Christianity you aren’t real Christians” stuff - 80% of the posts attacked the position that I had which is that you can lose your salvation. I have obviously consulted many online resources etc and posted for them to see but they refuse to accept it.

I honestly believe that this doctrine is the worst doctrine to come out of Protestant/Evangelical theology. It is presumptuous, arrogant and completely unbiblical. It really made me mad that I was getting attacked for that.

Perhaps you getting attacked had something to do with you calling the other posters persumtuous and arrogant? 🤷 In other words, maybe you could have approached the subject with a little more tact?

I didn’t call anybody out personally. I spoke generally and said it is a presumptuous and arrogant belief. Which it is - especially in light of what I was posting about, namely, those who make posts such as “well when Jesus Christ sends you to burn in hell I will be celebrating in Heaven”.

The last statement would bother me too but if you call a particular belief of someone presumptuous and arrogant it’s pretty much tantamount to calling them presumptuous and arrogant. The internet is a great too but personal interaction can be tough…for a lot of reasons.

The main problem with OSAS is that it PRESUMES you can never lose your faith. If a person DOES lose their faith, then the argument goes they never had faith to begin with. It is pernicious, circular reasoning that doesn’t stand up to the simplest logic and thoughtfulness. There is just no getting around it, you can’t have OSAS unless you have faith that can never be lost. NOTHING in the bible talks about faith that can never be lost, in fact just the contrary.

You say you didn’t call anyone out personally but made the statements “generally”…

Hhhmmmm…

Did anyone call you out "peronally’? Or were their statments likewise “general”…attacking church teaching and the position on OSAS.

Please consider that these (general) attacks on your position were not “calling you out personally” and yet they offended you and you take them personally. Why? Because in attacking the position you hold, they attack you. In like form, when you atack their position you attack them.
The proper use of terms and language is extremely important in these kinds of discussions.

Having said this, I do agree that OSAS is an extremely dangerous theology.

The OSAS idea is very, very popular with Evangelicals. The pastor at the Presbyterian church I attend has stated that he thought some people were believers but obviously they weren’t because they lost faith. They can recite scripture to back up their claim. (I am not one of them.)

I would say OSAS is a very, very bad belief if it is false but it has nothing to do with looking forward to people going to Hell.

By the way, if I convert to Catholicism most of my acquaintances will claim that I obviously never had saving faith.

Matt. 12:33-"Either declare the tree good and its fruit is good, or declare the tree rotten and its fruit is rotten, for a tree is known by its fruit.’ We Catholics need to be known by the fruits of Charity and Joy and Peace and Patient Endurance and Kindness and Goodness and Gentleness etc. when dealing with everyone. Then we will see the doors of our Churches being opened by those who once opposed us.

From what I understand it to be, if you have sought salvation, or to become a born-again Christian, if that is your chosen faith; or in another faith you have sought God’s forgiveness; then if you repeat the same sin that you committed beforehand, you have lied to God and therefore, fallen from His grace.

All of the OT and NT references point to the fact that forgiveness involves remorse for your past wrongdoings. And therefore, if you feign piety to God, and continue to sin in your heart then you will lose salvation.

Redemption in the eyes of God, by all accounts, involves making good on your promise to God, that is never to do it again. In short not repeat the same sins over and over again because that means you are really unrepentant and therefore have made no efforts to stop.
