Once Upon a Time There Was Communion in the Hand

I don’t know where you got this idea.

I receive Communion on the tongue whenever I go to the Pauline Mass.
Let me clarify for everyone. One can not receive in the hand at the TLM. Reception in the hand is not part of Traditional Catholic spirituality. Yet it is frequently a topic discussed here in the forum of Traditional spiritiuality. Thus, when one questions why non-traditionalists post here, I like to look at the rules and scratch my head. This forum is defined by the topic, not the posters.

Newt, consider this; prior to discovering a nearby TLM I received Communion in hand from an EMHC at my local NO parish. Discovering the TLM and the learning I’ve done in the past year has opened my eyes to a very different Catholicism then the one I knew. As a post-Vatican II child I was taught to receive Communion in hand and no one I ever noticed received on the tongue. The reasons for CITT are sound and the reasons for CITH are dubious at best. In looking back I now feel cheated in my Catholic education and instruction as I feel I was doing it wrong all those years. Perhaps other Traditionalists feel the same way and so speak up regularly against CITH.

In approaching therefore, come not with your wrists extended, or your fingers spread; but make your left hand a throne for the right, as for that which is to receive a King . And having hollowed your palm, receive the Body of Christ, saying over it, Amen. So then after having carefully hallowed your eyes by the touch of the Holy Body, partake of it; giving heed lest you lose any portion thereof ; for whatever you lose, is evidently a loss to you as it were from one of your own members. For tell me, if any one gave you grains of gold, would you not hold them with all carefulness, being on your guard against losing any of them, and suffering loss? Will you not then much more carefully keep watch, that not a crumb fall from you of what is more precious than gold and precious stones?
  • Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, “Catechetical Lessons”, 23:21
The Catholic Church has from the beginning allowed the faithful to receive Jesus in their hands or on their tongues. As far as crumbs being Jesus, the Church has learned that the crumbs are not Jesus, since the accidents of the bread and wine remain the same. But the crumbs were considered to be Jesus in Cyril’s time.
Consecrated ‘Crumbs’ most certainly are the Body and Blood , Soul and Divinity of the Master - hence the Paten and the Pall - please check you facts on your comment and correct as needed. Aquinas is an excellent reference on this question. Further, Cyril is not the Magesterium… the previous writer has quoted the Highest Authority that we should receive " Food Indeed " on our tongues, kneeling, as being fed like children at the hands of ‘Persona Christi’: Communion on the tongue kneeling has been the tradition of the Roman church for centuries - and was never changed; but when the abuse crept in post Vatican 2 i.e. communion in the hand in Eurpoe first i recall, Rome Paulus VI] allowed it as an option for bishops conferences to approve. He left this reverential decision to the same folks who have given us bankruptcy, closed schools and churches homosexual assaults on our children and more recently Notre Dame!

Quite well put.
Tradition vs. Novus Ordo and tradition itself/apologetics/ Magesterium …

Allow me pose a question- due to Powers neither of us understand, we now have 2 ‘forms’ for offering the Sacrifice of Praise; one ancient and refined, reverting to the Apostles themselves the Extraordinary form (sic)] And the newer, Apologetic affirmed community centric "Our sacrifice " a mis translation that was allowed by our Bishops and which changes the Sacerdotal theology … with what is called a’ presider’, not a priest offering sacrifce or celebrant] A.K.A. the Paul 6th experiment/ the ordinary form .

For a sacrifice to be completed it must be accepted by the One to Whom the Sacrifice is being offered . Which form do you think is more pleasing to God the Father? the One that calls on the Church Triumphant by name to bear witness or the one that beckons my brothers and sisters?

It is an indult! It was an indult when it was granted and it remains so. Because of the indult, our local law may reflect the change in practice.
If that’s true than isn’t celebrating the Extraordinary Form also still an indult? Benedict XVI never said Quattuor Abhinc Annos (the indult for the Tridentine Mass) was revoked or superseded when he promulgated Summorum Pontificum.
Latin GIRM 161: Communicandus respondet: Amen, et Sacramentum recipit, ore vel, ubi concessum sit, manu, pro libitu suo.
Yes, that’s why I specified para 160. I was not referring to 161. The U.S. Bishops did not ask for any adaptations for para 161.

It is really quite simple. Sin is not from the hands, it is from the heart. Poetic language does much to teach us our faith, but when one takes poetic language and attempts to make it literal, one misses the point, almost entirely. Further, I believe you may find in the bible the comment about the sinfulness of tongues. You might wish to consider that for a moment before you try to be literal with everything you think supports your position.
Hi- I wonder if Pilate knew what you say prior to his washing his hands.- was his sin on his hands or in his heart- why did he go thru the motions? There is more to the washing of the hands during the TLM offertory prior to the Canon according to Fortesque THE ROMAN LITURGY], not the least being that in the primitive church among the offerings brought up and received touched] were fish and produce ; hence a need to wash hands Ah! the good old days!!! - but the symbolism of reciting psalm xxv 6-12 can’t be lost on you- in fact , in the TLM the priest spends a majortiy of his prayer time pleading with God to cleanse his heart and mind to somehow make him worthy a priest to offer this Magnificent oblation. 😉

Summorum Pontificum, article 1: “It is, therefore, permissible to celebrate the Sacrifice of the Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962 and never abrogated, as an extraordinary form of the Liturgy of the Church. The conditions for the use of this Missal as laid down by earlier documents Quattuor abhinc annos and Ecclesia Dei, are substituted as follows.

So yes, QAA and ED were superseded. They no longer apply. And some canonists argue that SP is saying that an indult should never have been required because the 1962 Order of Mass was “never abrogated”, according to Pope Benedict.

You cannot interpret GIRM 160 outside of GIRM 161, whether in the English or Latin.

GIRM 160 reflects the effect of the indult for our country. The indult was granted to Poland by Pope Benedict in 2007, and it was rescinded by the Primate of Peru in 2008. It’s still an indult.

How appropriate; a Catholic making use of a clown on a CITH thread. That pretty much sums up the arguments presented over the last two pages. pnewton thinks there is no objective truth and history is irrelevant, cluny thinks if the Eastern Catholics do something then it’s automatically correct, and otjm remembers a pre-Vatican II priest saying Mass intoxicated and yet still under fifteen minutes so everything done in the "spirit of Vatican II’ is groovy. Everybody dance.

I’m not sure what I Believe actually believes in but here are the facts. The Catholic Church is in decline. The majority of Catholics are not Traditional, Progressive, or Neutral, they are Lapsed. The majority of people who actually attend Sunday Mass don’t believe in the Real Presence. Although I’m not aware of any surveys of Tradional Catholic belief in the Real Presence I’m willing to wager it is nearly if not completely perfect. If you can’t admit to the connection between Vatican II/Novus Ordo and our current state then you are either obtuse or harbouring an ulterior motive.

It’s sad that I thought of liturgical abuse the moment I saw this clown picture. Progressives will talk about abuse occuring pre-Vatican II with drunk priests and express Masses. I suppose alcoholism may be easier to hide in the EF than OF but this is a red herring isn’t it? If the tempo of the Mass is the worst abuse that occurred pre-Vatican II then I believe the clown mass trumps it. CITH is another liturgical abuse and its affects are clearly described in the above paragraph.
Very well written observations and strikingly thought provoking for me- thank you sincerely -
don’t despair; Mary’s heart will ultimately triumph - we have her word on that-

Hello All,

I am one who preferences mouth over hand. And I have looked into this subject. And even though I have my preference and the obvious confusion over what the saints and doctors meant when there are those of the same time period saying different things, this is the conclusion I have come to understand through conversation with my priest and a theologian I respect.

How the mass is practiced is not Tradition (aka dogma as to the mechanics of it). There is definitely Tradition/dogma (before I get attacked) that for the eucharist to be consecrated and become the body and blood of Christ, the celebrant (priest) must say the words as prescribed by the Magisterium (as far as translation is concerned) which of course comes directly from Christ’s own lips.

In the hand or in the mouth is tradition, not Tradition.

Though I do agree with the majority that more reverence and awe is shown our Lord by receiving not only in the mouth but as used to be done, kneeling.

Unless I’m missing something, it sounds like you’re challenging my post, which was merely an agreement with the previous post by Sir Alec. If that’s the case, you’re preaching to the choir. In that is not the case, I’m at a total loss.

If the issue is a lack of exposure and education, I can see speaking out* for* the advantages you see in communion on the tongue. However, I do not understand arguing against what other people prefer. I guess in light of how some people are passionate about which Star Trek is the best, this should not be surprising.

If personal preference becomes our rule then each parish will soon have their own version of the Mass.

The Star Trek example is nonsense. Anyone with even a basic appreciation of science fiction or literary critique knows TNG was the best. 😉

But where the Church allows such preference, then personal preference is acceptable. Circular, to be sure.

You show great wisdom and insight.

The issue isn’t a matter of preference it is whether it is proper or not. CITH in modern times started as an abuse in Europe. Pope Paul VI acquisced and issued and indult to the dioceses hell bent on retaining it. Somehow the practice caught the attention of American bishops and soon after the indult was interpreted as valid here too.

Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour sacrificed Himself on the cross for our salvation. He asked us to receive Him in the Blessed Sacrament. Shouldn’t we do so in the most reverent manner?

The issue isn’t a matter of preference it is whether it is proper or not.
Well, that is where I do not agree. “Proper” implies a right or wrong of the matter. As other rites do not follow the Latin rite in this, I can not see this as an issue of proper or improper. In any case, the Church would make such a distinction. Since an indult is allowed, I can not believe propriety to be an issue. If something like this is not disciplinary, nothing is.

The bolded statement above is an outright falsehood. I replied to a similar statement of yours in another thread in which you claimed that the majority of Catholics did not believe in the Real Presence. In that reply, I posted a link to a CARA poll taken in 2008 that refuted this claim. My post was shot down by another poster who said that the poll was basically meaningless since most Catholics did not attend Mass on a regular basis. I did agree that the poll was taking into account mainly those Catholics who do attend Mass at least once in awhile and that the beliefs of those Catholics who are regular Sundays attendees does not reflect on all other Catholics.
Now you have gone even further by claiming that the majority of people who do attend Sunday Mass do not believe in the Real Presence. What an incredible leap of hyperbole! What omniscience you have been gifted with to know what is in the hearts of millions of faithful Catholics! Once again I am posting what the CARA poll found. This was an officially sanctioned poll by the USSCB with the focus on the sacramental life of the Church and belief in the sacraments. Not a poll taken by a newspaper. I have little hope that you will pay any attention since you seem to be oblivious to any facts that do not support your own highly prejudicial and judgemental point of view.
Eucharist and Belief in the Real Presence
Nine in ten weekly Mass attendees (91 percent) say they believe that Jesus Christ is really present in the Eucharist, compared to two-thirds of those who attend Mass less than weekly but at least once a month (65 percent), and four in ten of those attending Mass a few times a year or less (40 percent). Among Catholics attending Mass at least once a month, the youngest generation of Catholics (born after 1981) has similar beliefs about the Eucharist as Pre-Vatican II Generation Catholics (born before 1943).

.

And if you can’t admit that most of the problems in todays Church are due to a multitude of other factors, rather than the typical so-called traditionalist catch-all complaints of Vatican II and the Mass of Paul VI, then I would suggest that it is you who is obtuse and has an ulterior motive!

Attendance at Mass. A 1958 Gallup Poll reported that three in four Catholics attended church on Sundays. A recent study by the University of Notre Dame found that only one in four now attend.

Only 10 percent of lay religious teachers now accept church teaching on contraception. Fifty-three percent believe a Catholic can have an abortion and remain a good Catholic. Sixty-five percent believe that Catholics may divorce and remarry. Seventy-seven percent believe one can be a good Catholic without going to mass on Sundays. By one New York Times poll, 70 percent of all Catholics in the age group 18 to 44 believe the Eucharist is merely a “symbolic reminder” of Jesus.

At the opening of Vatican II, reformers were all the rage. They were going to lead us out of our Catholic ghettos by altering the liturgy, rewriting the Bible and missals, abandoning the old traditions, making us more ecumenical, and engaging the world. And their legacy?
