One Billion Catholics?

For the past ten years or so we have been told there are now over one billion Catholics. What does this mean? How many of them attend chuch each week? How many have left for other denominations? How many beileve in all the Church teaching? I think the number if faithful Catholics is 1/4 of that.
 
If its not apparent where you are, rest assured there a lot more Catholics in many parts of the world. In South America there are a lot of Catholics. In Africa there is an increasing number of Catholics. The world is a big place. There’s over 1 billion Chinese and over 1 billion Indians in the world, but that doesn’t mean you’ll see them everywhere. 1/3 of all people are either Chinese or Indian.

This of course varies by country. For example, in Argentina, 20% are practicing, Italy 33%, while Poland has 75%.

I presume that we’re using the American quantity for a billion?
 
The number of Catholics is the number of people who have been baptized as Catholics. Many people leave the Church at some point in their life, and some of them return later, others do not. Once Catholic, always Catholic, regardless of Church attendance. I just don’t think people who stopped going to Church or openly preach against Church teachings should be calling their classes or organizations “Catholic” since they are clearly not following the teachings of the Church.
 
The latest number is 1166 million 17.4% of the global population. These are the individual baptized as Catholic or converted to Catholic.

In the US 23-26% of the Catholics attend Mass at least weekly
