First, let me simply state this disclaimer: this is a rant. I am fully aware that things could be worse, that many have it much worse, and that I am being a whiner.
This morning STINKS!
I have a beast of a cold. Sore throat, headache, exhaustion, achy bones. My 3 year old came into our bedroom, ready to start the day at 5:30. This is 10 minutes before my little alarm buzzes me awake. I hate waking up before my alarm. I’m a mama with a baby–I’m up plenty in the night. Sleep is wonderful. I’ll take every last second of it that I can! 3 year old has a bad cough. She climbed into bed with her papa and me, and started coughing. This woke the baby. I take the baby down to the living room where I can nurse her. She ate, we snuggled, and I put her back into her little bed. Then I went back downstairs to start getting ready for work, and my 3yo followed. Fine. The following conversation ensued:
Amelia: Mama, will you cook my breakfast?
Me: It’s a bit early for you to eat, honey… are you actually hungry?
Amelia: Yeah. Can I have an egg sandwich?
Me: Sure. Go to the table and I’ll bring it over.
Amelia: No, I go play with my bouncy ball in the hallway.
Me: No, it is too noisy and you’ll wake your papa and your sister. No bouncy balls right now.
Amelia: …I’ll go do it anyway.
Aaaannnddd off she goes to do exactly what I told her not to. Ah, the joys of a 3 year old.
So, I told her the ball would be put away for a little while for her not listening. This of course led to an epic meltdown. I mean, full-blown, way-too-early-in-the-morning-for-this meltdown. Off to her room she is sent. She got to the point where she needed help actually calming down. The pan with the egg I had been cooking started smoking. I left her bedroom to go turn it off, and her meltdown reached yet another level that I hardly thought attainable. Oye.
So, we both take our moments to calm down. We reconvene in the kitchen. I went to brew a pot of coffee and we didn’t have quite enough… so, a weak pot of coffee it was going to be. I can handle that. I poured myself a cup, took the creamer out of the fridge and gave it a good shake only to find that it had been put away OPEN. Now creamer is everywhere. Ceiling, floor, my face, you name it. Creamer. On a positive note, I smell like a vanilla caramel which is quite nice. I clean the creamer, I make the egg sandwich for my little one, and I went to the basement to get the clothes out of the dryer that I never got to last night. Included in that was my one clean, dry pair of pants. I took them out of the dryer to find that they had ripped in the wash. I had to wear them anyway.
By this time, I had to leave. Papa came downstairs and apologized that he had slept through the whole ordeal. I then stubbed my toe. I hit my head on a cabinet. My 3 yo started crying, and I don’t even know what for. The baby upstairs started crying. I hadn’t had a chance to shower, or eat breakfast. I smeared a little make-up on my face, brushed my teeth, and took a big last gulp of my coffee. …I missed my mouth entirely, and spilled down my front. Outfit change. Yikes.
I left for work, had to turn around and come back for my cell phone. I again left for work, had to again turn around and come back for my breast-pump. I AGAIN left for work…and now I’m here.
I am generally pretty organized. I’m generally pretty easy going. I generally can take a lot thrown my way. This morning, I feel like Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day is written all about me. …You know you have kids when the literature you relate to contains short sentences and pictures. But I digress. …I think I’ll move to Australia.
Thankfully, I will no longer be rushing off to work once this month is over. Then I’ll be at home full time…to experience the glory of this morning again and again and again, every day.
Lord, thank you for the gift of smiling. And I know You’re up there laughing at me today. …Thanks, I think.
