Another great article by Mr. Staples. Yet many will still believe otherwise even when given the correct belief. Why? Why do Fundamentalist Protestants still believe Catholics place Mary over Christ? Please read the article and then lets talk about it and any concerns you may have. Thanks!
Because they’re completely deluded by their misconceptions, and refuse to see otherwise. Think of it this way. All your life you’ve been told 2+2 = 5. You Know it (with a capital K, it is irrefutable in your mind, there could be no other possibility). Then, someone comes along and informs you that, in all Truth (capital T this time), 2+2=4. Which are you more likely to do; listen to the man, rejecting everything your teachers, parents, friends and family have told you your whole life; or reject the man and continue to believe in your misconception?

Change is difficult, and it requires a heart open to Truth. Unfortunately, in my experience, no level of rational discussion can dissuade protestants from their misconceptions because they’re such a fundamental part of their belief structure. After all, as a protestant, if Catholicism is actually right I would be required to reshape my entire perspective on life and on God; if I’m sola scriptura it requires the rejection of a belief I’ve based my entire life on. If I’m OSAS, it essentially means that I’m losing the spot in heaven set out for me, and am having to work to re-earn it. It is a fundamental shift, one that requires extreme sacrifice and hardship. It is much easier for me to keep believing Catholics are nutters than to give up my cushy delusional perceptions.

Honestly, which path would you take?

Very good points. I was raised Baptist with the idea of Catholics are going to hell. Of course I did not buy that and I am Catholic today ;).

I would completely understand if someone doubted my word or teaching, but when presented with the CCC or Vatican documents, they still deny it.

They view it as fruit from the poisonous tree; it came from Catholics, so it can’t be right. It’s stupid, circular logic, but it’s what most of them use in my limited experience.
