One continual reinforcement for the truth of the Catholic Church is the nature and number of its enemies.

Tony Alamo Christian Ministries gets raided by the FBI as part of an investigation into child pornography, sexual abuse of children, and physical abuse of children, and what does Tony Alamo have to say?
“Where do these allegations stem from? The anti-Christ government. The Catholics don’t like me because I have cut their congregation in half. They hate true Christianity.”
Sure—it’s all a Catholic conspiracy.

They always know which Church to attack, don’t they?

Now when I hear “remember the Alamo” I am going to have this man in my head.

I remember when Alamo had a big business concern in Nashville. His followers used to fan out and put anti-Catholic leaflets under car’s wipers at Catholic churches, and they even got to my car in Kentucky. Vile stuff.

He got in trouble in Tennesse over tax fraud, was convicted of tax fraud in Arkansas and served a 6 year term. He’s not a very nice man to put it kindly, and I think he has mental problems.

Probably, and most certainly has problems of some sort if the allegations hold up.

What’s interesting to me from an apologetics standpoint is that whenever something like this happens in America you don’t see the investigated party blame the Methodists (though the President is a Methodist), or blame the Baptists, or the Episcopalians, or the Pentecostals, or even the Mormons or the Orthodox—they blame the Catholic Church.

Why the Catholic Church, which, after all, is a religious minority in America?

He pronounces his name a-LAHM-o, so if you can remember that pronunciation whenever you read his name, maybe it won’t be so bad.

Well, let’s not be cavalier about the threat Tony Alamo represents—after all, if he’s cut the Catholic “congregation” in half, he’s got, what, 650 million people in his congregation?

Unless his math’s as bad as his theology and moral compass.

I would not worry about it. Whatever numbers (studied by who? how?) may have dropped a bit since this event.

Where did you come up with this number.??

1.3 B Catholics, if “half our congregation” went to Tony Alamo, would be 650 million or so ex-Catholics. That’s nearly twice the U.S. population.

I was being facetious, although probably less facetious than Alamo was.
