In the beginning was the word, and I believe the word was made flesh in Jesus Christ, and the word was God.

John 1:1

Thanks so much for these answers. I’m trying to aquire a feel of where people’s hearts are with regard to thier faith. This helps.

The answers have been interesting and telling.

I hope to get more.

Given the complexities of existence, it’s the only thing that makes logical sense.

I believe in God because no matter what happened to me in my life, I always felt He was there for me and the Bible proved this many times. He eventually became my “Father”. No matter what religion I looked at or dabbled in, God stayed with me. I couldn’t even chase Him away! [giggles] So I settled into His all-embracing love.

When I discovered that Catholicism was the Christianity that Jesus brought us, I gradually accepted Mary as my “Mother”. Now I have two parents that I can believe in and love, and KNOW that I will be loved in return. 👍

I’m going to give this a try.

The reason for “one reason” is not to limit anyone’s answer but there has been many many threads on why God exists that get bogged down very quickly with deep scientific and theological discussion. I thought if we attemtped to limit it to a sentence (or so) that was your personal most compelling reason why you believe in the Christian God (meaning of course the God of the bible from the Christian perspective) what is in the heart of many may quickly and more easily emerge.

I’d prefer this thread stay away from the discussion of why you believe God exists. i.e. uncaused cause, intelligent design, etc… I’d prefer to gather reasons on why Christians believe in God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

possible examples : early christian martyrs; dead sea scrolls; fulfilled prophecy; private revelation (but be careful not to elaboorate 😉 ); historic evidence of Jesus. I hope my meaning is somewhat clear.
i just do. hows that for short? now let me ask you, why do YOU believe in God?

I can’t seem to manage not to. 🙂 Even when, as a teenager, I was ashamed of my faith and made up all sorts of elaborate excuses not to discuss my Christianity with my friends, I could never turn my back on my faith. It was as strong as ever, just not on the outside. And even when I hardly thought about God, and when I stopped attending Church (college), everything I did was still marked by my faith in His existence.

My only explanation is that as a person who had a pretty rough childhood that’s left many a scar, I was given an incredible gift of faith from God so that I could make it through the difficult times. All of my memories from the earliest to the latest, are marked my an undeniable and unescapable knowledge that God IS.

I believe that God gave me a gift of faith to preserve me from the bitterness and hatred and rebellion that might so easily have overcome my life because of some of my experiences. I couldn’t be more grateful. 🙂

Right back at ya ha? 😉
Actually, I like your answer and would like to borrow it. 🙂

I think my best honest (or best attempt to be honest) answer might be (and I’m afraid it’s not very profound):

The combination of two reasons, one practical and the other emotional.

Practical: I can’t find any convincing holes in His Revelation (and I seem to spend my life trying. Not because I want to find a hole, because I don’t want to find a hole).

Emotional, because the deeper I pursue the more meaningful and divine it all appears.

I violated my own One reason rule.

Because a year or two ago I decided I was done with it all, that it was too much work to be a Christian, so I decided to see if athiesm was even a possibility for me. I even prayed “God, if you’re real, let me see what it’s like without you, pull out of my life please” (sort of a paradox but whatever 😛 ). And for a week I lived like an athiest and it was the worst most miserable existance I had ever felt. I was alone all the time and I felt that and I realized that all my life I had felt God’s presence but had taken it for granted.

That’s why I believe. 😃
I know I did something similar to you years ago & it didn’t last very long! How sad for atheists:(

I know there is a God, because I know good and evil.

I know there is a Christian God, because it is a very unexpected yet fitting answer to the very complicated and crazy problem of knowledge of good and evil.

Because His creation is a reflection of Himself (we are created in His image.) We are not singular, asexual creatures; we are created to be a family – like Him.

To keep it simple, I believe in God because anything that binds together men across all barriers of time, culture, race, social status, and monitary means has to be divinely inspired.
Governments fail, countries fall, civilizations disappear and cultures change, only belief in God has sustained man throughout the ages. This is a miracle that can only be atributed to The Supreme Being.

P.S.
I know you only wanted one reason, but I have to give another one. I have experienced God in my life, as have we all, even if some of us don’t realize it…yet.🙂

Step 1. The Gospels of today contains the same words as the original copies.
Step 2. The original copies were accurate historically.
Step 3. Jesus claimed to be God. Therefore, he was either Lord, liar, or lunatic.
Step 4. He was not a lunatic or a liar, therefore he was Lord.

++ For me - there is no one reason 🙂 ++

Because we see him involving himself in human history, I do not know of any other faith system whose God does that.
