In my opinion, a large proportion of the Catholic community in America have been assimilitated into the wider Protestant/Calvinist culture without realizing it. This is probably attributable to the influence that the media has on culture.
I think you’re right on, here!

Sadly, many lifelong Catholics do not know their faith.

John wrote his last book around 90 AD. what do you mean?
Yes, but we didn’t know that it was a “Book of the Bible” until 405 AD, when Pope Innocent I promulgated the canon of the New Testament to the Universal (Catholic) Church, thus creating the table of contents for the world’s first Christian Bible.

Everything prior to that was just various collections of books - the “memoirs of the Apostles,” as St. Justin calls them. 😉

I think its important for Catholics to be open and loving and prayerful with non-Catholic Christians, without losing their specific Catholic identity. This identity should be an open gate towards Protestants, not a barred door. The “gates of hell will not prevail” against the Church not because the church’s own gates are girded up with greater bars of iron, but with great Love.

Peter says that Paul’s writings were scripture!

2 Pet 3:16
He (Paul) writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Which “other Scriptures” was Peter talking about? His own? Do you think that he knew he was writing Scripture when he was writing his letters?

And if all of Paul’s letters are to be considered Scripture, then could we be missing some? 1 Corinthians 5:9 seems to indicate that there was actually a letter written to the Corinthians BEFORE the first one we have in our Bibles. I wonder what happened to it? And why is it not considered Scripture?

The early church also considered other writings Scripture:The Didache, the Shepherd of Hermas, The Epistle of Clement of Rome to the (maybe) Corinthians. But these writings didn’t make it into the Bible because the Church made the decision that they didn’t measure up.

God gave us the Table of Contents of the Bible through the Bishops of the Catholic Church. I never really thought about it til I was an adult! I sort of had the idea that the Bible fell down from Heaven! 🙂 It nearly blew my mind when I found out that God used the Catholic Church to bring us the Sacred Scriptures!

The reason I said it was silly is not to insult, but to show the illogical position of thinking that our faith comes from the Bible even if lets say the Bible was put together within months of John writing the last book.

Lets say they had phones back then and modern communication and printing capabilities, then as soon as he wrote that last book it was distributed, then they called all the Churches together and decided on what is officially the Bible. At best even using modern day commmunication and equipment it would take at least a year to publish. That means at about 91AD the official Bible comes out. Now even thinking absolute best case scenario, which never happened, where did our faith come from?

It certainly did not come from the Bible, even though it is the inspired Word of God.
It came from Jesus who taught the Disciples who taught other men and so on and so on until the Bible was made canon in about the Fourth Century.
So the faith comes from Jesus and that is how we understand the Bible from the faith, not the faith from the Bible as that would make no sense, unless it fell out of the sky and that is all we had.

God Bless

We are not saying the Bible isn’t Scripture or not the inerrant Word of God but that it must be understood correctly as it is the Word of God.

“Scripture” = “Writings.” Not all of St. Paul’s letters made it into the Bible, and neither did many of the other “Scriptures” (writings) that were in use by the Church in those days. And the Book of Revelation, at least, hadn’t even been written, yet.
