I am quite early in my journey to Catholicism and would find a bible study really useful.

Does anyone know of anywhere there is an online bible study, where everyone reads a section the comments on their understanding and what they have taken from it.

I have suggested a feature for this forum which seemed to have a positive response, but without just starting random threads I’m not sure I could do this myself without a dedicated section added by admin.

Thanks

You might try the courses by Scott Hahn offered through the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology:

stpaulcenter.com/studies/courses

You might also ask whether there is a bible study group at your parish. That would provide a way not only to study the scriptures but also to build relationships with other Catholics.

Thank you, I’ll have a look into that link - at first glance it looks great

I’ve been really diving deep these past 2 years and for me I found it is better to listen to the experts than to try to figure it out on my own. Then I take what I have learned and practice it here on CAF. Further learning more by reading others responses.

I will second this site: 👍

I also like this site:

I listen to CAL daily. You can get the ap or the podcast directly on your phone. Here’s the link to old episodes

Thank you all for your replies - lots of great ideas for me.

I really appreciate all the time you have spent finding the resources for me, what a lovely community we have here at CAF

:blessyou: in your study Bible journey.
" to abide in the word" includes the Scripture study

Some of the previous comments recommend parish Bible study, but I have found that to be not too helpful.

Most of the parish Bible studies in my area are very low level, where the moderator just guides us through the printed introductions to the books of the Bible and then maybe goes over a selected number of footnotes. I find this not only not helpful, but it slows me down.

Now, there are some Catholics who haven’t read the Bible, and need a very slow pace.

From time to time, I repeat my recommendation that you look ahead and set a budget for yourself, maybe for a year, five years, or ten years, and pick a figure of money that you will set aside to buy commentaries or other books that explain the Bible.

Ignatius Press and TAN Publishing are two sources of a wide range of books, but there are others. An internet search may flush them out for you.

VERBUM has a series of computer based materials for Catholic Bible study, but these are expensive. I have no experience with these.
(No one study Bible or commentary will be adequate, is my opinion. How shall I say this politely. The Catholic commentaries I have seen are not adequate. Or, put another way, I have not heard of the ultimate Catholic commentary. From another perspective, I don’t know of a “who’s who” of Catholic Bible experts in the US, who have studied Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, German, French, Latin, Syriac, etc. who could teach an intensive course of Bible study. Stop and think about that when you consider buying somebody’s book.

If you broaden your search to non-Catholic authors, you will get non-Catholic conclusions, but their books might be useful, nevertheless. You have to be more careful in choosing and reading those.)*

Just want to put another endorsement out there for Agape Bible study that Phil19034 recommended. It’s awesome!

Re bolded & underlined:
I’m unaware of any online Catholic Bible Study where you can share answers and comments about the passages online with other participants. If anyone does know of one, I’d also like to know about it.

Some years back, one of our CAF participants started one here, and it went on for some months before ending.

Good afternoon, everyone. I’m interested in knowing if anyone here would like to help me test some Bible study materials I’m developing for young adults. What I have in mind would be two or three 60-to-90-minute video study sessions (using Google Hangouts or Skype), so that I can see how long the materials take to go through, and how effective they are at teaching and generating conversation.

You can see the first study guide (for the 28th Sunday in OT, coming up in just two weeks!) at catholiccrossreference.com/biblestudy/

While I generally agree, if you can find a parish study using Ascension Press (on their website you can locate a study in your area) it would be well worth it. Especially the series done by Jeff Cavins. I have done his classes on Matthew, James, Revelation, Acts, and salvation history…all excellent…

Also I just found Catholic Productions which has some very reasonable bible studies on MP3. Brant Petrie’s “Faith and Works” is the best $6 I have spent in a long time.
