Hello,

My local parish only has eucharistic adoration on friday’s so its hard if I don’t make it on Friday to go to the next town for adoration.

I have strong desires to spend as much time as I can with Christ in the Sacrament daily but I can’t physically be present with the Sacrament.

I understand that it is not physical adoration or really adoration but just viewing Christ in the sacrament. I know it is like online mass which doesn’t fulfill obligations.

I was wondering if it would be wrong to participate in online adoration? I know I am not physically viewing the Sacrament but I am viewing a webcam’s live feed of the monstrance almost like the webcam is a window into the chapel.

Any advice?

Here are some links for it:

I’ve seen a couple of these sites before and, really, I share the same questions. I may be “naturally” tech-savvy like my generation tends to be, but I honestly don’t know how much different it is to see the Blessed Sacrament via stream instead of a video of it – or how the “live” aspect of it might affect the experience.

I’ll be subscribing to the thread, as I’d love to see if anyone has any sources to say one way or another.

I actually wonder myself. I have read that it “doesn’t count” as going to actual Adoration.

I have been to one of the live sites.

I personally–and this is my opinion only–don’t think that there is anything wrong with it.

I think that anything that can draw me personally closer to the Lord cannot be a bad thing. I look upon it as another way of praying to Him when I see him in the Blessed Sacrament, even in a live streaming capacity.

I know that it is not the same thing as visiting Him in Adoration in a church or chapel, but I still look upon it as an occasion to pray and be drawn closer to Him.

There can be nothing ‘wrong’ with watching online Adoration in the same way as there is nothing ‘wrong’ with watching a Mass on TV

You found a few!

Online Adoration is a splendid devotion. It bears true and good spiritual fruit.

Don’t feel otherwise! Far from anything being wrong, it’s splendid and very beneficial! 🙂

EWTN has benediction every Sunday at 6 PM. During this, the monstrance is exposed, and Father gives Christ’s blessing with it to … not only those present … but all those who are participating by TV. If this was not a valid blessing with true adoration, then I do not see any value in EWTN continuing to schedule it. They would not do so, IMO, unless it truly benefits the viewers. There are only a handful of people at their service and of course, the nuns who sing beautifully.

Haven’t you seen programs with the Pope giving his blessing for those in attendance, and specifically states that it is for all those viewing by TV? I recall times when the Pope bestowed a plenary indulgence for TV viewers, even though they were not physically present.

There is no time or space with God, who is eternal. I would agree that on line adoration is valid, especially when your heart is devout and attending to Him with love. After all, through His Spirit residing within you, the act is very fruitful.

A further thought …

When you do online adoration, it is not a picture on an inanimate screen in front of you. If you bring yourself in spirit to the chapel, then the eyes of your body are only an instrument of your spirit, to unite you with Jesus.

I believe God taught me this analogy many months ago when I wanted to pray for the sick, but could not be physically present to lay hands on them. He brought to my mind that we can connect with anyone, anywhere in the world via cell phone, and be present to them. The only thing necessary is a “connection” that happens to be wireless. We can do this in spirit, also, where there are no limitations. Since then, I have begun to pray, especially at night when they are asleep, so that their activity will not prevent my being present to them in spirit.

Sr. Briege McKenna, who has a well-known healing ministry, learned the same lesson. God taught her to pray for people using the telephone to establish connection, and they were healed. This is documented in her book.

I think online adoration can be beneficial. I would just warn about going too far in this line of thinking. I have seen online churches and some suggestions of online confession. That would obviously not be good or beneficial.

Adoration is not even in the same ballpark. There are conditions to validate a sacrament, and driveby or online confessions are not in the rubrics. This is only a misnomer that has never been a reality in the Catholic Church.

So Sirach2, (and I promise I’m not trying to be argumentative so I hope it doesn’t come across that way) do you think of one is unable to get to adoration in person that virtual (online, live) adoration is an acceptable substitute?

Yes, I believe that it is acceptable, especially since so few parishes offer this opportunity for the faithful. There are many reasons that priests are unable to offer this, so if one’s heart is moved to adore Our Blessed Lord in this way, I think He is pleased. My pastor only offers adoration once a month for First Friday, and the adorers must be scheduled so as not to leave the Blessed Sacrament unattended. How else would we make adoration the rest of the month?

The Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters sponsor the link I use, Savior.org. I trust that they researched this thoroughly before offering the live image 24/7 for adoration by the faithful on line.

Online adoration is great. I love the savior.org website. If you have any doubts, just read about the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters who host the website. It’s a good work they’re doing. 🙂

Obviously physical adoration can’t be replaced (the way videochatting with a loved one can’t replace being together in the flesh), but this is a helpful alternative for are homebound or don’t otherwise have access to physical adoration.

I’ve been using St.Mary’s website for online adoration…personally, I think it is exactly the same as being in His True Presence…just like being there with Him at real adoration…Jesus himself tells the woman at the well that God isn’t limited to being worshipped at any particular place but is worshipped in Spirit and Truth. I think the key is…you have to have faith in God and Trust Him that he can use an online connection to Him to work the same wonders He does for those physically present at a chapel/church. Physical proximity does not equate to spiritual proximity and vice versa…Jesus himself tells us in the gospel to close the door and pray in secret and that the Father sees this and is well pleased!!! Online Eucharistic adoration is as valid as going to see Him physically because in a sense you are using your physical body to see a live feed of Him in the Blessed Sacrament. We can even feel a sense of closeness to the people we see online in the chapel and I pray for them and I take it on faith that they unite their prayers to mine at the same time…
