Online masses not enough, bishop says. "Deep down you know it is not the mass"

“Participating in this online mass… helps you spiritually; you hear the words of God; it helps you to pray; you become part of the worshipping community but deep down you know it is not the mass,” he said. “Our celebration with God and our relationship with Him is something that is real, actual and cannot be reduced to virtual. We all long to go back to participate in the mass in a church. Virtual is not enough, we want the real thing.”

The Philippines is a Catholic country in Asia where there has also been a widespread inability to go to mass because of covid-19.

Sad but true. I detest the pandemic, and eventually may begin to return to Mass even with the dispensation in place. The Eucharist is too important, it is literally the flesh of the Lord of Heaven. I know it’s dangerous, but one must consider the value of things. And life in a fallen world ranks pretty low. At least, if I see jobs and such open back up, I will immediately run to the Mass, as work is certainly less valuable. If it is allowed to be spread for money, then let’s spread it for God.
 
Well, of course you know it is “not the Mass”. But if it is all you have, so much better to have it, than not to have it. There is no sacrament to receive, but you can unite yourself spiritually.

Not saying that the bishop suggested this, but I can’t imagine how anyone could “dislike” an online or televised Mass. Nobody accepts it as a long-term substitute. It is just improvising in the best way possible. I think the Japanese Catholics would have been grateful to have it, if such technology had existed at that time, when they were basically abandoned for 200 years.
 
I know what you mean… I was surprised how much I missed going to mass until I started going again.

I pray your churches open again soon… maybe in the mean time, if you live alone, is it possible to maybe go to a friends house then you wont be attending the mass alone?
 
Our parish has reopened with strict distancing requirements. Dispensation still stands. He has added quite a few weekday Masses so that those who can attend, in theory free up seats for Sunday. We’ve been going on Tuesday evenings.
 
The bishop is correct. It’s sad that he has to say “deep down”
