Today, the computer virus epidemic has let me to take drastic measures. I have on average 12 virus infected computers that I clean each week, and I’ve actually developed my own windows pre-install environment disk with some tools on it to remove these PC’s. It used to take me days but ever since I’ve been doing my research I cut the time down to about 6-8 hours on average and the customer gets their PC back sometimes the same day.

I’ve created a virtual machine on my service computer and I regularily try to infect it by downloading toolbars, mywebsearch, keygens, going to porn sites, etc. I do this to benchmark the capabilities of the removal tools that I use. Going to sites like virustotal, etc is ineffective because the samples are old. I need brand new samples in the wild. Sometimes it takes awhile but I’ll eventually catch one or 2 here and there and sometimes I can spend hours with no results. It’s tricky.

Anyway, does the principle of double-effect is it? Work in this situation? I feel awful that I need to resort to these online activities for this greater good, but it’s the only way that I know of.

OK…would the lack of responses mean that I’m being ridiculously scrupulous? 🤷

No, it means it’s dinnertime two days before Christmas.

If you’re not looking at the porn and enjoying it, I’d say you’re OK.

Yeah most of the time i’m using my hand to cover the screen, lol.

Hi OpenSource:

I fix computers at my school as well (I’m sort of the go-to person when machinery breaks down, and while I don’t do it for a living, I do work on a few computers every week…just in my spare time, fixing things as I go). Once again, the vast majority need fairly simple fixes (corrupted boot sectors, or spyware/adware/virus cleanups, that sort of thing). I used to be amazed at the number of computers that had prOn files on them, even here at a Catholic school, and sometimes when I opened browsers I’d get all these mousetrapping splash screens for various adult sites. It used to irritate me, but now I don’t even notice it anymore…it’s just a businesslike thing…kill this window, reset this page, clean out these cache files, etc, etc, etc…like polishing silver to remove all the tarnish, you know…dull, dull, dull.

My belief is that intent is what matters here, as intent is a necessary condition of sin…if you intend to seek out and look for this stuff, that’s one thing…but if it’s already there and you’re just cleaning it, no worries and no sin. You’re just doing a job…I suppose this job is not all that different from a police officer who has to review adult sites to see if they are breaking the law…they’re hardly searching for this stuff, and its just an unpleasant duty, like brushing/flossing your teeth. I can’t deny that a lot of people love this stuff and actively seek it out (just see all the posts on it), but I think prOn is intrinsically boring anyway…it’s stylized, unrealistic, fake, badly scripted, poorly acted, completely unbelievable, and about as unarousing as you can get. I mean, people see this stuff and get turned on? What a poverty of imagination that is! I’m probably jaded, or cynical, or maybe just getting old (probably a combination of all three).

So: no sin. Probably scrupulosity. And yeah, a lot of members here are distracted (as they should be) by holidays, family and friends.
