It’s called variously “deification” “theosis” and “divinization” and it means sharing in the very life of God by means of sanctifying grace and thus becoming like Him. In heaven our participation will be magnified. But we will never be God in the sense that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are God, uncreated and eternal divine persons.

The first quote is from the Bible and the others are from saintly Church Fathers/Doctors.

460 The Word became flesh to make us “partakers of the divine nature”:78 "For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God."79 "For the Son of God became man so that we might become God."80 "The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he, made man, might make men gods."81

P.S. It’s generally not a good idea to rely upon a secular dictionary when dealing with theological terms – just as it wouldn’t be a good idea to rely on a mainstream secular dictionary when dealing with medical terms – for that you’d go to a specialized medical dictionary.
Please direct me to a theological dictionary, or provide a reference. The New Catholic Dictionary 1910 version is online and does not contain the word “deified”

I assumed we were speaking English, and “deified” is a common usage English word that has a specific meaning.

There is a vast difference between “to be made a god” and “to be made god-like”, It is a goal of all believers to become Christ-like.

I think you mean the Catholic Encyclopedia that is online. “Deified” is a term that I think is used more in the Eastern Churches.

You can’t assume things like that. When using medical terms do you assume that they mean what they mean in “common usage”? If you did that as a physician you might end up killing someone!

The reference I gave was from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Eastern Churches should swallow their pride AND CORRECT THEIR ENGLISH so that Gentiles will not get the false, incorrect message that Mary is being turned into a God.

In short, DO NOT TELL THE GENTILE WORLD TO EXPAND THEIR MEANING OF DEIFY SO AS TO INCLUDE THIS EASTERN CHURCH MEANING. INSTEAD, THE EASTERN CHURCHES NOT ONLY SHOULD CLARIFY WHAT THEY SAID IN THE PAST, BUT SHOULD STOP SAYING THAT MARY IS DEIFIED.

Who the heck do you think you are?

You need to study more.

===========================

Doesn’t Jesus in the Gospel say: SAY BLACK WHEN YOU MEAN BLACK , WHITE WHEN YOU MEAN WHITE, ANYTHING ELSE IS FROM THE EVIL ONE???

Even St. Paul with regards to the Holy Eucharist advises us not to take Holy Communion if in doing so, we will cause others in sin to also take Holy Comunion and commit sacrilage. So also with this erroneous Eastern Orthodox english. By such englih, you will cause others in other nations to think that Mary is being turned into a God, and they will say, THAT 'S WHAT WE LEARNED FROM THE EASTERN CHURCH!!! Who knows, you might cause others to separate from the Catholic Church???

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Divinization doesn’t sound much better to the uninitiated anglophone, but that’s what it is.

However I appreciate your concern about the possible misinterpretation of Mary’s role. There are many such terms used exclusively for Mary which make it difficult to explain the limits of what we think about her. Terms like ‘Co-Redeemer’ and ‘Mediatrix of all Graces’ for example. If it is any consolation this deification process is for all of us, you and I included. We are called to be holy.

I am sorry about my reaction to your post but the “swallow your pride” comment didn’t sit well with me, it hurt my pride 😉

Deification is for all of us, we are called to be holy.

Hesychios, Catholics do NOT believe that Mary is deified in any way, shape, or form. To believe such is blasphemy.

Good grief!

The Hail Mary is a powerfull prayer to Jesus. In the format of the rosary it only becomes better. I have learned of numerous Protestants that pray the rosary - in secret of course. They don’t want to get shunned by their fellow Protestants who my be ignorent of the greatness of the rosary. It seems from what I have heard and read, more and more Protestants are taking up the rosary, even if in secret.

There is one and only one Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hi, 🙂
The oldest Marian Prayer can be found here.
maristoz.edu.au/spirituality/sub_tuum.html
someone else mentioned Lutheran’s pray the Pre-Trent Hail Mary, which goes,
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Lutheran’s can also pray the Rosary, but it differs in that where you normally say the Hail Mary, Lutheran’s say the Jesus prayer, and I think they only have the original three mysteries.
Once they have meditated on the mysteries, they then hold the medal and can say a free form prayer, along with either the P-T Hail Mary, part of the Magnificat, or a prayer written by Luther in honour of Mary, called the ‘Evangelical Praise of the Mother of God.’
In all other respects, it is basically the same; starting and finishing with the Invocation; the Our Father and Glory Be / Doxology are situated in the same spots, and Mary is given due respect.

Peace be with you all, and those whom you love. 🙂

Fr Ambrose:
Here is what Mary actually heard - the words from the lips of the Archangel, in Aramaic…

Shlom lekh Mariam,

Maliath taibootho,

moran a’amekh,

mbarakhto at bneshey,

wambarakhoo feero dabkharsekh.

There should be a sound file of this somewhere on the Web?
That’s beautiful. Is the entire Aramaic translation of the Hail Mary available? :bowdown2:

st julie:
An interesting fact about the Hail Mary…As you recite the words you inhale and exhale at a correct rhythm. Anyone in a panic situation automaticly finds themselves calming down because of this fact. Neat Eh

st julie
Can you explain this a littel more? I’m saying the Hail Mary and now all I’m trying to do is figure out when I’m inhaling and exhaling!

praying to mary is an act of worship and should be prohibited she can neither hear you or save you. In gods word it says there is one mediator between god and man and the man is christ jesus. Also god says you shall have no other gods before me. Also god says worship the lord your god and him only shalt thou serve.

Ahimsa:
I suspect quite a few Hindus (and Buddhists maybe) also pray the Hail Mary, since Mary is considered an incarnation of the Goddess by a growing number of Hindus. I personally know of one Buddhist who says the Hail Mary.
That is awesome, because I have faith that Our Blessed Mother will lead them to the Truth and her Son, even if they are mistaken about who she actually is, I think she will have pity on them and pray to her Son for their conversion.

You need to capitalize the “G” in God to differentiate between false gods and the one True God. If you were actually reading this thread you would find that we are not worshiping Mary, that would be idolatry and blaphemous. We agree with you, on all points, except for your mistaken belief that we worship Mary. To “pray” means to ask, the verb is not used exclusively for the worship of God. It is used in the English court system in the modern day. We have given you correct information here, if you continue to accuse us of worshiping Mary, you are falsely accusing us. If you dont believe us, just look up official Catholic sources on the matter (not anti-Catholic lies) Also, yes, Jesus is the only mediator between God and man, however we are called to pray for one another as the Chruch, the Body of Christ. We are in the Communion of Saints, both living on Earth and those saints who are face to face with the Almighty. There is nothing wrong with asking a fellow Christian to pray for us, especially the Mother of Jesus Christ, himself.

Bossy Britches!

Nice. you can get off the soap box now, the “all caps” preaching fails to impress. Sorry, our religion is 2,000 years old, sometimes the slang of language takes awhile to change. I am sure that we still use the original meanings for other words such as “cool.” And I assure you that you probably wouldn’t see much in Catholic literature calling Jesus “phat.” Heck I think you would be hard pressed to find a book calling him “groovy” and that was about 4 decades ago. I guess we could go back to using latin, the dead language that doesn’t change, but then you would probably accuse us of not speaking in a language that average people can understand .
Chill ! down boy, down boy! It will be ok!
