ROME - Results from a new Pew survey show that Jews are the most knowledgeable among America’s religious communities about world religions, while only half of American Catholics know what their own Church teaches on core principles such as communion.
According to the survey, exactly 50 percent of Catholics in the United States correctly answered a question about Church teaching on transubstantiation - the belief that during Mass, the bread and wine become the actual flesh and blood of Jesus Christ.

“The other half of Catholics incorrectly say the Church teaches that the bread and wine used in Communion are just symbols of the body and blood of Christ,” and a small percentage are not sure, the study found.

I have heard about Catholic’s ignorance that the eucharist is actually Jesus Christ. So I do consider this a problem when it comes to some.
However, I do have a reservation about such a poll. They generally count as a Catholic someone who self-identifies as a Catholic. This then would include people who haven’t been in a Catholic Church for years, cafeteria Catholics, and others who have problems with faith.
So perhaps it is less then half when it comes to Catholic who practice their faith.

We already have a thread on this here.

Pew Survey: Only half of Catholics know teaching on Eucharist Liturgy and Sacraments

50% is a much higher number than I remember hearing about as a child. Back then it was only around 30% who understood and believed the Church’s teaching on the Eucharist. So perhaps we should read this as a sign of hope. Maybe things are actually headed in the right direction, despite all the scandal rocking the Church today.
