I’m trying to get an answer…Did we commit mortal sin by consuming meat dishes (which is all that was served) at a Catholic funeral luncheon on Friday???

Probably not a mortal sin. Arranging a funeral is a stressful time for a bereaved family. They probably just forgot. Also, if the luncheon was arranged by a non-Catholic restauranteur or caterer, that person may not have been aware of Friday abstinence during Lent.

It certainly may have been an oversight on the part of a caterer, bereaved relatives, or church ladies. However, a person attending the funeral **knew **they should be abstaining from meat should mention it in Confession. It’s not our place to state if a person committed a mortal sin or not. The priest in Confession can discuss an individual’s culpability in this situation.

I don’t think you did, but I would confess it just the same…It is a sin to waste food…I can’t imagine anyone not making sure there was meatless food available, even if it was just cottage cheese or mac and cheese

DId Catholic prepare the food for this event? Perhaps the family was so upset they didn’t consider the day…I work at funeral dinners at out church and have never witnessed this before

Having attended and assisted with many funeral luncheons, it is astounding that they served only meat. I have never seen a luncheon where there was not some bread, cheese, at least one salad and or a side dish or veg platter, if nothing else sandwiches with chips and dip. It sounds as if someone was not thinking clearly to have provided nothing but meat.

If you are again in that situation, perhaps you could offer to run to the store to get some bread and salad so people can have more than a plate of meat.
