**Ontario MP, wife denied communion **
**Canada.com ^ **| 6 July 2005

Charlie Angus and Celina Symmonds had their lives turned upside down when they were told by their parish priests that they could no longer take communion because their stands on social issues conflicted with church teachings.

Angus, a New Democrat MP who represents a northern Ontario riding, ran afoul of the Roman Catholic church over his support for the federal government’s controversial same-sex marriage bill.

"It’s quite disturbing,’’ said Angus, pointing to what he called "the rising militancy of language within the church. I went to Ottawa feeling that I would be speaking as someone rooted in a faith tradition and rooted in a justice tradition.

"Then your involvement in the sacraments becomes a political pressure point. It was unacceptable.’’ Prime Minister Paul Martin, also a practising Catholic, faced similar flak from a priest in his Montreal riding over the bill. Father Francis Geremia said Martin no longer deserved the sacrament of communion and "I pray that he will lose his riding’’ in the next election.

AND HERE’S THE REST OF THE STORY

If we really want to show how much we assent to the Church, we should all turn over our votes to the Church. They could simply apply their sample ballot X times; and all registered Catholics will have voted the pro-Catholic way. If you are 100% pro-church, then why not surrender control of your property and voting rights to her?

In the case of Angus and Symmonds, the bishops in charge of their parishes backed their priests. :clapping:

This implication, (hypothetical conclusion) is nonsense.

Go to the following link and see the reason why the Bishops and priests withheld communion for the public figures mentioned.

The reasons are discussed regarding John Kerry’s stance in the last presidential election.

Thank you

Freedom does not mean one is free to support evil. Freedom means you are free to support good.

Withholding communion is one thing. Going through the formal process of excommunication is another thing, something which the Church should consider in the case of Paul Martin. That way the issues are weighed canonically and explained canonically.

Much emphasis has been placed on Archbishop Gervais’s responsibility. Actually he has dropped the ball badly. Nothing is stopping every other priest in Canada from publicly denying Martin communion should he visit their parishes.

Where are Priests for Life Canada on this issue?

You are aware of how many of our bishops have dropped the ball in the USA. I wish the Vatican would weigh in, but I do not see that happening.

In Ecclesia Mundi there is a new thread on Benedict and the Cafeteria Catholics. Maybe that is a ‘step.’

Naa, if you are a true Catholic then this sort of thing would not happen.

Also its not how we vote, it is now those in the public eye vote as they have the power to lead people astray.

They are public officals who claim to be Catholic yet hold view that are incompatable with the Catholic Faith. As people see this, they may get the idea that it is ok but it is not.

Maybe I should rethink my position on Canadian style healthcare, it certainly seems to grow strong clerical backbones.

Then again, there are the the Canadian Anglicans 😛

I posted this on another thread, but think I will post this here too:

How about the miltancy of the language and ACTIONS against the Church. Expect the priest and his bishop to be arrested for “hate” crimes.

Unfortunately, that’s not far fetched. Bishop Fred Henrey of Calgary is being taking to the Human Rights Tribunal for his pastoral letter on Gay Marriage:

The Knights of Columbus in Port Coquitlam, BC is being taken to the Human Rights Tribunal as well for refusing to host a lesbian wedding reception at their hall:

This is just the begining. It won’t be long before charitable status is taken away from Catholic organizations in Canada. Scarey…

Please pray for Canada - we need it!

PS - God Bless Fr. Lemire, Bishop Henry, and the K of C for taking a stand!
