Openly identifying as asexual doesn’t sound sinful to me. Attending meetings is probably fine as well. I don’t believe displaying the asexuality flag would be sinful or necessarily scandalous, either. As long as you live a chaste life according to your vocation, you should be “good”.

Welcome to CA!
While participation in “alternate” forms of sexuality may be sinful, because they violate or defeat the natural use of our bodies; there is no sin in declining to have sex at all.

Also, attraction or the lack thereof is not in itself a sin.

Going to meetings and the like are OK. You may however, wish to hold off on “publicly self identifying” or displaying a flag, as this might come back to haunt you should you later find someone you are attracted to.

I concur.
Why is this anyone’s business or yours to wave a flag about?
These are personal, private matters. If you are remaining chaste, avoiding porn, and holding the sacrament of marriage sacred, you’re not sinning.
All single people are called to chastity. I think you have that covered.
But announcing to the word? Getting a flag? Joining a group? Why?
Good that you are dealing with your Asperger diagnosis. As one poster said, perhaps your focus can be on helping young people who are not doing as well with it.
That would honor God, and remove the temptation to sin, as you would be doing good with your time.
While I concur about the flag (why on earth make this a public statement?) it might be helpful to him to be with others of similar mind.

In a sex-maddened world where everybody is seemingly either “coupled” or looking therefor, someone not having such a need ends up more lonesome than the norm, which may not be desirable.

My question is whether it would be morally permissible to openly identify as asexual, or to participate in asexual meetings, or to display the ace pride flag (which is not the same as the LGBT pride flag). Would doing such things be sinful or at least scandalous to the Faithful? I am 100% committed to all the Church’s teachings. Also, if I did come to the conclusion that doing these things is ok, I would not do so if I believed it would also promote a sinful LGBT lifestyle.
I don’t think you should necessarily hide your sexuality but you also shouldn’t shout it to the world. Meetings, if they are useful would seem fine. The flag seems wrong to me. Consider this, there are men who like buxom women. Should they go around telling people they do? Should they get a flag that tells the world about this sexual inclination? I don’t think so. I’d think it creepy. There is nothing wrong with the attraction but making it something you focus on and shout to the world would be wrong.

I’m not really convinced he has a need to identify with others like this. He appears well adapted and rather, is seeking to make a “statement”.
One can make a statement with their lives in terms of being good, holy, chaste, and giving of one’s time. Those statements are the most fulfilling. Just my 2 cents. 😉

Maybe this is a good place to maybe take a cue from Popeye, “I yam what I yam!”. Other than being a sailor he never identified with being “right handed” or “light on his feet” or “I’m balding” or any other such thing. The things that we are help in our make-up, most of them are not worth “identifying” as.

And as for “everybody” identifies as something, I don’t thing hetrosexual have a flag or a banner or feel the need to flaunt any part of their personal habits or persona on others.

As far as being asexual, it is probably the best thing to be if you are not called to the married life. Probably closest to what Jesus expects of us who are not called to married life.:twocents:

The thing is, I don’t think it leads to any good to identify oneself by one’s sexual nature. That’s meant to be privately explored between one and one’s spouse.
If someone is asexual, this is something that should probably be disclosed to a potential spouse beforehand. If two people are not sexually compatible, that could have a serious impact on a marriage or relationship. It wouldn’t work out very well if one spouse never wants to have sex and the other spouse wants to have a lot of sex.

Why is sexual identity so important to people today - why do people have a need to flaunt their sexual identity. I have never understood this or do I feel a need to identify in that way.

Its always been a mystery to me - my sexuality is not what I want people to know me for and which is a private matter and is actually no one business but mine . It seems only in this modern world it has become so important.

I am not interested in whom you have sex with or what your sexual preference is - why do I need to know this? Please keep me out of it.

Can anyone tell me why this is such a great need for people in today’s world?
It is not a need. It is part of gradually hypersexualizing people with a gradual propaganda campaign that started in the late 1960s. Some people no longer believe in privacy anymore. This is important to avoid. Be aware of it but warn others. Our brothers and sisters in Christ are being poisoned. The media began to turn away from the truth in 1970. I watched it happen. I lived through it. It is terrible.

I agree that it should be divulged to a potential spouse, but not by way of a bumper sticker!

I agree, though it occurs to me that the same could be said of virginity status, that this should be divulged to a potential spouse but it is not something to be proclaimed to all in sundry.

However does that mean it is inappropriate for a Christian committed to chastity to wear a purity ring?

I don’t think of it in terms of appropriateness.
I just seems odd to me, I would have never worn one, it seems like those who wear one want to talk about it with random people.
Why?
I don’t get it. I am so much more than my sexual pursuits or non-pursuits.
When people stop making their sexual preferences public fodder, then maybe we can return to some semblance of modesty, chastity for singles, and privacy for families.
There’s WAY too much discussed with people who have no need or business knowing your business. We do live in a voyeuristic society thanks to reality tv and “instant” communication.

Amen.

People are also so much more than their religious or political or ideological affiliations, but some of them often spend a lot of time identifying with one or all of those. Why is that?

Possibly. Is the ring’s purpose to let everyone know that he or she is a virgin, or is it meant to be more of a personal reminder of their commitment to God? I’m honestly asking because I don’t think I’ve personally met anyone who had one. At least, I didn’t know what it was if I saw one. How does one identify a “purity ring”? Is it something everyone would notice and ask about, or does it only have significance to the person wearing it? I’ve occasionally read about purity ceremonies where young girls are made to stand in front of a congregation and dedicate their virginity to the honor of their fathers or something like that and yes, I think that’s inappropriate and moreover .

Sex is different because it’s meant to be intimate.

I disagree that this is a comparable issue.

I don’t think so. At the end of my life I want to identify as a Catholic and then whatever descriptor you want. Catholic husband catholic father, etc. it is who I am, it defines me more than anything else. If it doesn’t, I would neeed to account for that before God.

I think purity rings are a very Evangelical thing and often is associated with not just abstinence but an overall courtship culture. True though that purity rings aren’t always obviously an advertisement of one’s purity. Some do have “purity” or “true love waits” engraved on them, but many have the engraving inside the ring so it is meant more to be a personal reminder of the pledge.

I agree that public “purity ceremonies” or “purity balls” are really over the top and IMHO also sexist, I’ve never heard of a purity ball that involves a young man making a purity pledge to his mother. But I do know of a less creepy version called The Silver Ring Thing that AFAIK does not limit the rings to girls, indeed if the FAQ on the site are accurate it doesn’t even limit them to virgins. The ring is engraved with “THES 4:3:4” this being a reference to Thessalonians 4:3:4.

What about students who are already sexually active?
All of us have messed up or made mistakes in one way or another. At a SRT Live Event, we address this question in the Second Chances message which speaks directly to the issues and problems that sexually active students have encountered. We recognize the fact that many students who attend the SRT are, or have been, sexually active and they need to know it is possible to start over. We speak plainly on the forgiveness and love Jesus Christ offers to change your future. The answer is YES YOU CAN START OVER and, in fact, for this reason many students attend our program.

You can live as a single person, if that’s what you mean. Jesus said that there are persons who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Perhaps you fit into that category. In other words, God has given you the desire for celibacy in order that your worship may be more complete. Being single and celibate gives you more time to study the Scriptures and pray, which is valuable time that a married person wouldn’t necessarily have (especially if they have a kid).

Sex is different because it’s meant to be intimate.
Precisely. Which is why wishing to self-identify publically with one’s sexual desires is, or should be, somewhat creepy.

Live as you choose including sexually, but keep your flag out of my face, IMINWHO.
