Sex is different because it’s meant to be intimate.
Even straight people indirectly reveal their sexual orientation all the time by putting pictures of their spouses and children on their desks at work, by introducing their spouses to others by saying, “This is my wife,” or “This is my husband.” And since straight people have almost never been persecuted for being straight, they’ve never felt a need to have Straight Pride parades. As one meme I saw recently put it, “Gay Pride was not born of a need to celebrate being gay, but our right to exist without persecution. So instead of wondering why there isn’t a Straight Pride movement, be thankful you don’t need one.”

Indirectly revealing one’s sexual orientation is not the issue. Yes, we tend to presume that married couples have sex, but we don’t really discuss it in polite conversation because it’s no one else’s business. In the cases of gay couples, they can have photos of their families as well, if they have one, and people will probably assume that they are having sex with the person they call “partner”, but they won’t talk about it because of boundaries and good taste.

If someone is asexual, this is something that should probably be disclosed to a potential spouse beforehand. If two people are not sexually compatible, that could have a serious impact on a marriage or relationship. It wouldn’t work out very well if one spouse never wants to have sex and the other spouse wants to have a lot of sex.
Such disclosure need not be by way of a flag flying in the front yard.

INdeed. Sexuality, like other body functions, should be kept under the skin except for those directly involved. Would you “self identify” with your blood-type, or display it with a flag or bumper sticker?

I think purity rings are a very Evangelical thing and often is associated with not just abstinence but an overall courtship culture. True though that purity rings aren’t always obviously an advertisement of one’s purity. Some do have “purity” or “true love waits” engraved on them, but many have the engraving inside the ring so it is meant more to be a personal reminder of the pledge.

I agree that public “purity ceremonies” or “purity balls” are really over the top and IMHO also sexist, I’ve never heard of a purity ball that involves a young man making a purity pledge to his mother. But I do know of a less creepy version called The Silver Ring Thing that AFAIK does not limit the rings to girls, indeed if the FAQ on the site are accurate it doesn’t even limit them to virgins. The ring is engraved with “THES 4:3:4” this being a reference to Thessalonians 4:3:4.

There are many problems with purity culture bs. For one it has lead to this idol of marriage where marriage isn’t viewed anymore as a vocation but rather as a check box in life needed for a full filling life. Add on that the inscription love waits is also an issue. With our culture completely devaluing non marital love, it creates this perspective of single equals wothout love and the only love available is through marriage. It is why divorce and remarriage is so common in other traditions because they can’t imagine being alone and without love when single when that shouldn’t be the reality.

Many of these same churches than spend all of its time of families, marriage, and couples while ignoring those who are celibate (some even trash single people as immature or weak in the faith). When one makes marriage into this idol it distorts the vocation which hurts single and married people alike.

Why is sexual identity so important to people today - why do people have a need to flaunt their sexual identity. I have never understood this or do I feel a need to identify in that way.

Its always been a mystery to me - my sexuality is not what I want people to know me for and which is a private matter and is actually no one business but mine . It seems only in this modern world it has become so important.

I am not interested in whom you have sex with or what your sexual preference is - why do I need to know this? Please keep me out of it.

Can anyone tell me why this is such a great need for people in today’s world?
Because our world is sex obsessed.

Sex has displaced things that used to matter like friendship, family ties.

Nowadays it’s all about sexual relationships and only about sexual relationships.

I don’t get it.

👍

This is what turned me of Evangelicalism.

Marriage has been turned into a requirement for people to be considered a real Christian.

Single women especially older single women are regarded with pity and contempt while single men are viewed with suspicion and as potential predators.

If my neighbors puts a rainbow flag in their yard, I personally like knowing that we have something in common because gay people usually do belong to a subculture.

i like redheads, and I’m more of a chest man than a thigh man…
What flag should I get?

This didn’t happen overnight. It took years and years of repeating the wrong messages and years and years of portraying immoral sexual behavior in movies and TV as OK. The goal was to destroy the family. The other goal was to destroy motherhood. That baby growing in her womb could be killed at whim. in the 1980s, out of thin air, No-Fault Divorce. I opened the paper to the Classifieds and saw ads like this: “No kids? $75 and you’re out. Call 800-DIVORCE.” The kids were traumatized but that wasn’t the point (I’m not talking about abuse). So the kids got older and distrusted marriage. They didn’t even know how to date. So they lived in sin. Or just took one night stands. I lived through all of this.

The world has always been obsessed with sex, it’s just that people are more open about it now. You should try reading the book by Robert Darnton, The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France. Some of these forbidden best sellers from 18th century France had pretty graphic drawings of sex in them.

A much larger number of people embrace (or regard as acceptable) certain behaviours (related to sexuality) today than embraced them (openly or otherwise) in the past.

I’m not getting your point here. The same is true for premarital sex, contraception, and divorce and remarriage unfortunately.

Yet for some reason if one dare talks about being gay it’s viewed as the end of the word on here even if celibate for crying out loud. Yet all those heterosexual sins basically accepted by society and many Christians as okay and seemingly give them a pass. … the outrage just isnt there which gives off this perception of hypocrisy which makes talking about catholic sexual ethic all that more difficult.

I could give many reasons why being more open about my sexuality helps me in carrying my cross in fidelity with Church teaching (because being open doesnt mean suddenly wearing rainbows everywhere and making it the first thng one ever talks about, its just if it comes up i can talk about it without having the mental fight about masking my expressions and thinking about how to deflect).

I also find it disengenious by some on here to be intentionally obtuse about this issue. No one is getting disowned, losing their job, facing threat of violence for having a preference for someone who is a redhead vs blonde. Yet I have friends disowned from their family, I worry about disownmenr, who have lost jobs, been thrown out of their churches all for being gay despite being celibate. When people make comments like that it becomes quite clear that they are rather ignorant on the issue or seemingly don’t actually care about gsy people like me. They just lament the periods where they could pretend they don’t really exist. I will again plug Washed and Waiting by Wesley Hill. It is a short read and is a wonderful narrative and testimony of a gay/ssa person wrestling with this issue while adhering to a traditional sexual ethic. It’s also a relatively quick read.

I’m just when tempted it’s by a different object. It means I have to be careful about distorting love for another guy (which can be good if expressed like love that is found in friendship) into a romantic love which should be reserved for a married couple (which in our teaching is between a man and a woman that should be open to life).

Think about the hugely disproportionate media attention gay people have gotten in recent years. No one “pretended” there were no gay people. Did no one know in the 1960s or 1970s? I worked with LGBT people in the 70’s and early 80’s. We all got along. I didn’t think for one second what they did on their own time. It was none of my business. The same with heterosexuals regarding sexual activity. Privacy meant private for everybody.

But today, some are saying, “Hey. What’s the big deal?” I’ll tell you what’s the big deal. Going to the voting booth and seeing same-sex marriage on the ballot. Who put it there? Seeing billboards with two men who wanted marriage. Hearing about “marriage equality.” Opening the newspaper to read comments from readers when same-sex marriage was voted down in my state, “The great hate state.” Irrational. 5 year old Bobby has no clue. Then, in public schools, gay/same-sex marriage story books given to little kids - by who? The list goes on and on.

First, heterosexual marriage was attacked, then gay marriage appeared on the scene. The traditional family had to go. Women were all victims. All men were enemies. We didn’t get here overnight but I watched it unfold. SSM was voted down twice in California, the President “evolved” on the issue, who, just previous was being given a hard time by the LGBT media over not moving fast enough to give them what they wanted, and then the whole Boy Scouts issue and Trans. Next, asexuality - whatever that means.

No one needs my permission to do anything. The Supreme Court saw to that.

The media has sided with sexual immorality. Decade after decade, TV and movies portrayed immoral sexual activity a little, then more explicitly and then even more explicitly. I CANNOT see most movies. I NEVER asked for any of this. But, over time, the media propaganda wore people down - gradually, like a slow poison. I read the LGBT press. They are upset that LGBT characters will be, depending on the source, less visible or invisible on TV and/or movies this year. While pretending to care for other minorities, it’s clear that they primarily care for sexual immorality.

I watch this as part of my job and on my own time. It boils down to sex with whoever, whenever and with as many partners as possible. Marriage? Who needs it? The Return On Investment is so low anyway.

Yes. I referred to sexual behaviour, not gay sexual behaviour. My intent was to explain to Thor that simply asserting people have always “obsessed about sex” glosses over the real changes that have happened.

I am seeking moral guidance on the issue of asexuality and the degree to which I can openly identify with and participate in asexuality things.

I was recently diagnosed with high functioning Autism (Aspergers) as an adult and have been learning a lot about who I am through that. As I continue to read and research, I am thinking that the sexual orientation of asexual, or “ace,” solidly describes how I think and feel.

I essentially am not sexually attracted to any person. While there are girls that I find to be good looking relative to others, there is no real sexual attraction. All the equipment works and I can physically complete the act, but I cannot be sexually aroused by another person. I have fallen into the sin of pornography and have also tried the act out of curiosity. I am aware of the morality of this and have confessed it. The point is that during these deeds, while I can be aroused and maintain it, it must be done manually as neither the pornography nor the direct presence of a naked girl can arouse me and I never had any interested in the “other things” such as kissing and touching and anything else that goes along with it. Should I get married, I may have sex, but it would be motivated by a desire for a family and/or to please my partner rather than any real attraction.

My question is whether it would be morally permissible to openly identify as asexual, or to participate in asexual meetings, or to display the ace pride flag (which is not the same as the LGBT pride flag). Would doing such things be sinful or at least scandalous to the Faithful? I am 100% committed to all the Church’s teachings. Also, if I did come to the conclusion that doing these things is ok, I would not do so if I believed it would also promote a sinful LGBT lifestyle.

Some people might want to know why I might be motivated to do this in the first place. I suppose it has to do with discovering my own identity in the world, taking pride in what makes me me (I already have autistic pride things on my car), and meeting others similar to me.

Any advice grounded in sound reasoning would be greatly appreciated.
Hi. First and foremost I’d like to say be careful about getting advice from strangers on an Internet discussion forum – and I mean pretty much all forums not just CAF. People post all kinds of things; I won’t list things that I’ve read on this forum and others, but let’s just say that if I did it would be a pretty bad list.

Now at the risk of appearing to contradict my first paragraph, here’s my advice: intrinsically speaking I don’t believe you have an obligation to stay in a “closet”, but it might make sense to do so (to a lesser or greater extend as you deem appropriate) depending how you think that people you know would treat you if they knew.

Hi Thorolfr. Can you cite a Church document that tells gay people to stay in the closet? 🤷

Yes. I referred to sexual behaviour, not gay sexual behaviour. My intent was to explain to Thor that simply asserting people have always “obsessed about sex” glosses over the real changes that have happened.
But I think that AT’s post needs to be read in light of how often gay people get beaten up by so called traditionalist Catholics (who don’t speak on behalf of the Church mind you) on CAF.
