What is your opinion on the Catholic bishops’ support for typically socialistic ideas, such as universal heath care mandated and controlled by the governement, universal amnesty for illegals, extended unemployment benefits, diplomacy with terrorist states, and a world-wide governing authority or court of law?

Many Catholic bishops have long been influenced and misled by socialism, and tend to equate Catholic social justice with socialistic ideas. This nonsense has got to stop. These bishops are fostering the rise of tyrannical,over-bearing,mintrusive government.

I think they mean well, like most people on the left.

I don’t think they are trained in economics,…perhaps they just haven’t thought through those issues. Like most liberal economic issues, it feels good to argue against “greed” and “money”. They don’t know that capitalism provides more money for more people.

On social issues, like terrorism, they are blind to evil and what must be done to stop it. Maybe they want to be morally pure, I don’t know. I don’t think, 100 years ago, the same group of people would have had the same ideas. They understood that evil exists, and needs to be confronted.

Just my opinion. Obviously, I can’t read minds.

Margaret Thatcher said that the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of
other peoples money. Socialist advocacy sermons drove us out of the Catholic church.
There is a religious left and of course it makes them feel/look good to propose free stuff for
everybody. Great idea, where do I sign up? Its a liberal campaign promise, not a religious
doctrine and it shouldn’t be allowed in church. But we all know this and so do they. How
do we fix it? Where is the Vatican on this?

It’s disdressing how so many Catholic clergy and laity transpose the responsibilities of individuals to care for others in need to the government or make it a collective effort.
This tendency to look to the government or to society to do the commandments and to act as if it were a Christian person started to become widespread after the development of socialist philosophy in the mid-1800’s.

I think its sickening. Our Bishop, Daniel DiNardo, is really pushing for amnesty for illegals. He had every priest delivery a homily, on JULY 4 for God’s sake, advocating for immigration reform (amnesty) in our diocese. How offensive was that? He has also rounded up other liberal religious leaders in Houston (a sanctuary city) to promote amnesty. Meanwhile the western hemispere’s largest abortuary was being built 2 miles from his office and he NEVER once spoke out against it for 2 years. And get this: He is head of the USCCB pro-life committee! What a sham these bishops.

Liberation Theology is alive and well my friends. These liberal bishops have all but wrecked the Church in America, now they’re going after our great Republic.

Many of the US Bishops have embraced Liberation Theology, as another already mentioned. They have given up on God’s ability to bring about true social justice through evangalization and put their faith in structures of man. Provide food and shelter today and we’ll tell them about Jesus down the road, this is the modern thought process of the Bishops even if it means taking from others to provide this. Gone is the idea of “teach a man to fish” and “man does not live on bread alone”.

Now this is how I feel toward the ones that are well intentioned, but misguided. However, I do believe that there are those that are just simply political and enjoy the power that their office holds when they play ball with certain liberal politicians. Either way, the laity need to wield the power of the pocket book.

For those, loosely throwing around the accusation of “liberation theology”, you should at least consider that these Bishops, being learned and holy men, may be right about these things especially as concerns the morality of them and you might be the one who is wrong. One doesn’t need to rely on the bishops, any faithful true Catholic could lift several passages from the encyclicals of our most recent Holy Fathers, John Paul II and Benedict XVI that would make many of today’s righteous Calvinist Catholics blush. Both of these great holy men have condemned liberation theology. But for many today in the Church, “liberation theology” is anything that threatens their service of mammon after the Mass.

Cafeteria Catholicism is alive and well. But it doesn’t just affect those who promote liberalism, marxism and sexual hedonism. It also affects those who claim to be Catholic, but are in effect little different than southern “prosperity gospel” protestants. Thanks be to GOD, I see this problem as most affecting the North American church and not the emerging church.

I urge all who support “free trade capitalism” to read Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical, Caritas in Veritate. The Holy Father even calls for a global economic authority.

Pure capitalism opposes everything that Catholicism teaches.

It is not the job of Catholic bishops to spread a particular type of right wing American politics around the world. In Europe if the Catholic bishops preached against universal healthcare the Church would have even less followers than it does now. America is not the world, and the Catholic Church has to cover the world, not just the Republican Party in America.

The pope has been influenced by socialistic ideas in regard to the economy and distributive justice, even though he knows how dangerous and disastrous socialism has been in Europe and Russia, both spiritually and economically. In that encyclical,he admits that an international authority might lead to tyranny. He stresses the importance of the principle of subsidiarity, but he does not seem to realize that no government or international authority can be trusted with much regulatory control over the economy, that is,over people’s business dealings and livelihood.

Capitalism is simply about making a profit from the sales of goods and services. There is nothing wrong with that. It is not equivalent to greed.

The Catholics bishops should only support policies that safeguard or respect the freedoms, rights and responsibilites that comprise natural law. Among these are the freedom to make a living and keep the profits from one’s work, and the right for nations to protect their sovereignty and society and culture. This does not trump the commandments of God. It happens that conservatives uphold the freedoms, rights and responsibilites of natural law, whereas progressives tend to undermine them.

DiNardo is my bishop too. And yeah I heard the homily on amnesty on July 4th as well, although I didn’t know that DiNardo was behind it. Actually I remember hearing the homily and thinking that the church might lose it’s tax exempt status… it was that bad.

I fully support the ideas that Jesus expounded while he was here on earth with us including being charitable to all, helping those in need and leading Christ-like lives. Hiding behind “the law” as did the pharisees and saducees has got to stop. I disagree with the notion that our Bishops are “socialists” unless you would also say that so was Jesus.

The commandments that Jesus gave us are for individuals to do on their own initiative.
He did not command us to use government policies and programs as a means to fulfill the commandments or redistribute wealth. The government cannot be charitable, and when it helps people in their personal needs it is for the purpose of keeping their support and keeping them in a state of dependency,as in socialist countries.

You and I ARE the government. Our country is government of the people, by the people and for the people. We are called by Jesus to take care of our brothers and sisters who are in need. Nothing tyrannical about that at all. I stand with our Church leaders on social issues and everything else the Church teaches.

For Whom Does the USCCB Speak in the Health Care Reform Debate?

By Robert J. Schiavoni

catholicmediacoalition.org/USCCB_health.htm
The Catholic Church is a worldwide organisation. While these points may be relevant to a specifically American debate on healthcare they are pretty much irrelevant to much of the rest of the world. Can you see the Catholic Church in the UK preaching against the National Health Service? How well do you think that would go down with the faithful in the UK?

The Catholic Church should not allow itself to be tied to one particular wing of American politics. Its remit is far wider than just the right wing of the Republican Party.

Your view of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops is obviously clouded by the reports of the main stream media which is totally anti Catholic to begin with. The USCCB is not tied to any political party at all, never has been and never will be. Attempts to “tie” the USCCB to any political party are only made by the main stream media in their efforts to denigrate our faith.

You appear to have misunderstood the thrust of my argument, my apologies for not making it clearer. I am not criticising the Bishops; I am criticising those posting here who want to turn Catholic Bishops worldwide into mouthpieces for the American Republican Party.
