I grew up in a very conservative offshoot of Methodism. I used to think it was ridiculous that we were taught that any kind of dancing,* any* where, was wrong.
I grew up & joined the UMC. Every time we have “liturgical (so called) dancing”, I wish I could turn those guys from my childhood loose.
I would also cheerfully loan them to you all. I assure you, the dancers would be :bigyikes: :bigyikes: :bigyikes: :bigyikes:

Clever, three selections but only one choice, agree with one you agree with the other two. So to make things simple I voted for all three.😉

never seen liturgical dancers- maybe they haven’t made it to the UK !! From the sound of them I hope they never do

Nice selection of choices…
I don’t guess you were really seeking divergent opinion, Ignatius.

No, this was in contrast to the Liturgical Dancers poll with only positive options. Give the comments a read though, they have about the same reaction on both polls. Looks like most folks feel their lunch comming back up when they hear Liturgical Dancers mentioned.

How do you feel about Liturgical Dancers? (BE HONEST PLEASE  )
The same way I feel about liturgical clowns and liturgical jugglers? In the West we should not have any such thing.

My only experience with a liturgical dancer was about 25 years ago at the Christmas Midnight Mass. The young woman had rehearsed at the church and got approval for her filmy dancing gown from my pastor. Come Midnight Mass, there she was, dancing about the sanctuary, in her approved gown, WITH NOTHING UNDERNEATH!

That was the first and last time liturgical dance “enhanced” our liturgy!

I don’t mind liturgical dance, as long as it is well done.
How should the rating card (to be filled out after Mass) for these dancers look?

1christianet.com/freeclipart/images/star_3.gif Really Bad - don’t come back
2christianet.com/freeclipart/images/star_3.gifBad - don’t call us we’ll call you
3christianet.com/freeclipart/images/star_3.gifFair - I won’t show you to the door
4christianet.com/freeclipart/images/star_3.gifGood - will we see you at coffee hour?
5christianet.com/freeclipart/images/star_3.gifBest - I will suggest funding this ministry at the next parish council meeting

Liturgical dancers are variables we all can live without.
How do you tell a bad dancer in the parish to hang up the dancing shoes?
Should someone else’s personal tastes be forced onto parishioners?
Does the church need the finacial burden of another ministry?
Is it really a ministry or just plain old entertainment for the eye?

Immagine for just a moment, if you will, being in the confessional with a Priest. Suddenly out of nowere a dancing young lady in a pink outfit bursts in and a choir begins to sing, “God forgives, God forgives! Confess now, God Forgives!” Or perhaps you are on your death bed and receiving you Last Rites when a group of Cheerleaders begins to dance. “Go Jesus! He’s The Man. If he won’t save you no one can! Yea!!!” Wouldn’t you feel just a tad outraged? I know this example is a bit extreme, but if Dance is not appropirate at other liturgical celebrations of the Sacraments why at Mass? Just a Thought.

Oh but they are allowed because they are not specified in the GIRM
😛

(sorry it was there)

Does the GIRM specify that reverant Elephants or Liturgical penguines are not allowed at mass? Does the Church really have to list absolutely every possible abuse. It is clear that liturgical dance is not part of any appostolic tradition. Certainly not in the Roman Church.

I’m sorry Friend. That was a joke.
I was in a heated debate with someone about Handholding at the Our Father.
The argument was that we can do it because it was not in the GIRM.
I mentioned Juggling was not in the GIRM either. Just because it isn’t there, doesn’t mean it’s alright to do it.
(someone else mentioned BBQ in the Choir loft:rotfl:)

lol. What a relief. There are still people with both common sense and a sense of humor! Sorry if I was meanspirited.

Just so everyone knows, here’s what the NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS has to say about it.

"all dancing, (ballet, children’s gesture as dancing, the clown liturgy) are not permitted to be “introduced into liturgical celebrations of any kind whatever.”
Hey, maybe the Catholic Bishops are smarter than I give them credit for. On paper liturgical dance may sound cool, but having seen it only once or twice, I would say," Give them the old vaudeville hook." It just doesn’t fit.

Liturgical dancers are an all around bad idea. They seem to consist mainly of people desperate to be noticed. I can see Africans or even Native Americans dancing in a procession, but not the majority population, as it is not a part of our cultural expression, at least not in church. I think most people’s natural reaction to liturgical dance is to laugh at it, but we don’t because it’s rude. If we gave way to our laughter, each and every time we saw liturgical dance, I firmly believe that it would go the way of dodo.
Ridicule by laughter. What a concept. I could do that. Maybe it would cause everyone else to break out laughing. Most people would probably already be on the verge of it. Or how about ridicule by parody? I saw LD once back in the early 90’s at Cardinal Mahoney’s annual LA Religious Education Congress. A few words came to mind: pagan, gay.

can’t understand why the good people of the parish don’t take them aside for a quiet word, if they still persist the good people of the parish should stand together and deny them admission into the church, the bishop would have to sit up and take notice then,
