Opinions on talking before and after Mass?

I honestly don’t mind if people say a few words quietly as long as they try to keep to quiet. What does get frustrating when you are trying to say your before Mass prayers is when the people behind you or directly in front of you talk non stop and make no effort to keep quiet in church.

I’m with the silence people. It’s annoying to walk into a church where the noise level before Mass is much greater than the movie theater before a movie. Yes we come together as community but that means we join together to worship God, not ourselves.

I agree with you. I don’t like talking before or after Mass either. I’d prefer people socialized outside of the Church, especially after Mass when people want to stay in their pews and pray. I try to limit how much talking I do in Mass. The only time I give in is when my little siblings ask me a religious question about one of the stained glass windows or what the priest is doing. Even then, I keep it short or say that we’ll talk about it later.

At my parish, people are always very chatty before Stations of the Cross!

This is a problem at my parish as well. I just truly don’t understand people talking loudly while others are trying to pray. As far as having the organ play after mass, we have a fantastic, award-winning organist that plays. It doesn’t make any difference to the talking.

What really gets to me as much as the before and after mass talking is the fact that people don’t wait until the altar servers are down the aisle and back around before leaving their pews. The poor servers have to dodge people trying to get out the door!

My son and I have been thinking of trying different parishes, or perhaps the early Sunday service at our parish. It seems to be better, but that means I can’t be in choir anymore b/c they only sing at the 11am mass. However, considering that sometimes people talk even while the choir sings, maybe that’s okay. 😦

When I mentioned it to some people in RCIA and the choir, I was told “well, that’s just the way this parish has always been.”
