No, it does not. The whole movie makes a lot of controversy over the false, Gnostic “Gospel of Thomas”. They alleged that it was written by the very hand of our Lord himself and chides Holy Mother Church for excluding it from the Canon of Sacred Scripture. Read here about this gospel:

Peace, so be it.

for the church to recognize the stigmata the person has to be a good practicing catholic, the woman is the movie definetly was not. The stigmata is a gift. Just “random” people don’t get it, the people who get it are holy first.

Yeah only the cream of the crop of saints like saint francis and padre Pio and a handful of others get stigmata. No atheist hairdressers who doubt the existence of God don’t get randomly the stigmata and its a blessing not a curse as in this movies bizarre scenario. THis movie is the most anti-catholic piece of trash I can think of. Of course the Davnici Code is coming I am sure it will be competitive with this movie.

I own it, thought it was a great movie…The information, however, i took to be false. If the vatican has not proven the that the scrolls were real, I won’t believe it…they have some of the best scientists and scholars working for them.

The Da Vinci Code is a bunch of lies. There are actually a few books out debunking all the pseudo-history and outright lies the author used to “sex up” his novel.

The Catholic Church is a very mysterious thing to those outside of it but less mysterious to those of us in it.

One would do best studying official Church teaching on stigmata and read some histories of saints and other persons who had this blessed mark of Christ.

The life of Padre Pio would be one place to start, but he is not the only man or woman to have been so blessed.

Good luck on your paper.

Timidity:
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops rated it as “morally offensive.”

usccb.org/movies/s/stigmata1999.htm
(They also rated Mulholland Drive as “morally offensive”. And Mulholland Drive may be the ‘cinematic incarnation’ of the one whom the Bishops’ serve as Lord.

This is the thing I find so confusing. How is it possible that we feel the need to label something before we even know what that something is? This is the confusion that the ‘movies’ - and the habit of criticizing them - have gotten us into.

Actually, those ratings may be right 99.9% of the time, but it is that .1% that is important.)
