In my case my father would have seen through that and been even more determined not to give me the car.In many cases today we are not asking God anything in prayer we are telling him what to do. In the revised text we are again asking our Father for things. It’s the difference between saying “Dad, give me a car for Christmas” and “Dad, you’ve always been generous and I haven’t always been obedient but if you would see it in you to give me a car for Christmas I would be most grateful.” You’re still asking for a car, but you are being grateful, respectful and recognizing that you don’t necessarily deserve a car.
A better approach for me was to offer him something like a promise to drive him to and from work using his car. And he offered to help me pay for my own car.
