Misleading! From the article:
“After Opana ER was reformulated in 2012, the FDA said abusers began injecting it more than snorting it. Injection abuse of the drug has been associated with an outbreak of HIV and hepatitis C, as well as a serious blood disorder.”
The only link to HIV is when druggies share needles! That can occur with insulin, Lovenox (anti-coagulant), Neupogen (bone marrow stimulator) and any other liquid drug! I see no move to pull any of those drugs from the market. The lowest common denominator is driving this - bad for those who suffer from intractable pain, such as late-stage cancer patients.

The HIV outbreak is caused by the criminal behavior of those already infected with HIV.

I agree with po18guy, this will just penalize those using the drug for its intended purposes.

The drug company stands by its efficacy albeit pulling it from the market:

"Despite its decision to remove the drug, Endo said it “continues to believe in the safety, efficacy, and favorable benefit-risk profile of Opana ER (oxymorphone*hydrochloride extended release)*when used as intended.” (From OP link)

It will be harder and harder in the future for anyone to obtain medications relieving pain such as this one as these drugs are more and more misused. (in my opinion)

My sister works in a hospital as a respiratory therapist and see people who seem to be in a lot of pain asking her to “do something” for “no one else will.” When talking to a few nurses (granted this is a small sample) they have noted it has become increasingly hard to get the drugs needed for severe/moderately severe pain for physicians are now so hesitant to prescribe these drugs for the obvious reasons.

I hope there can be a balance between preventing overdoses and providing pain relieve for those who do need it and meet the criteria for using the drug to alleviate their pain.

Mary.

A certain paragraph in this commentary reads:
Thanks to the opiate crisis, more and more patients are being denied pain medication even though they have never abused medication. Even cancer patients are finding it harder to find physicians who will write a prescription for an opiate medication. There has to be a better way to support pain patients who need real pain care.

I am amazed people are just settling and accepting that the DEA comes between a patient and their doctor! Why shouldnt we just leave the decision up to the doctor, thats why they go thru the rigorous schooling and training after all, right?

I am also shocked the company says it is OK with pulling it from the market…Hooey, they are caving to the DEA/ Govt, they have so many doctors scared to death of loosing their license or being sued, doctors wont even treat people the way they need it. Why would ANY company be OK with pulling a product that rakes in revenue, tobacco companies have no qualms about selling deadly products.

The DEA needs to be abolished, they are nothing but a tool of the drug cartels, Ever since the drug laws of 2012 went into effect, deaths and OD numbers have skyrocketed, due to all the former pill addicts being forced to switch to heroin.
