Options for Traditional Catholics

I think you can go to a sspx mass if you dont adopt a schismatic attitude, double check though. Also if you dont like the novus ordo, look into a greek catholic mass.
Notredame…unfortunately the SSPX chapel is equally far away as well. I seriously don’t have ANY options for a TLM except to drive which is sad in light of the SP of Pope Benedict XVI which has already been YEARS.

I feel the same way. We go to Mass to worship God with one another as opposed to going to Mass to enjoy the experience. I have been to Masses around the world and I am pretty sure God is just as happy with the celebration no matter the language or traditional practices.
My Lutheran friends use the same argument with me.

Hello Catholics,

What recourse do Catholics have who wish to live a traditional Catholic life if we do not have the EF available (the nearest one is 1 hour and 30 minutes away)?
Over the past 10 years, when our family first started attending the TLM/EF, we have moved quite a bit. During that time we have had periods where we have attended the TLM/EF exclusively, times when it was just the NO/OF, and other times when we bounced back and forth between the two.

I don’t know that I can say that living a “traditional Catholic life” is any different than living a Catholic life in general. Yes, it’s true that it’s a bit of a headache if your NO/OF mass is irreverent and goofy, but it’s the little things done in daily life outside of Sunday mass that really help build you up in your faith and keep you going, no matter what mass you attend. And truthfully, I’ve never really seen much difference in the habits and practices of devout Catholics who attend the NO/OF exclusively and those who attend the TLM/EF.

Is there anything specific that you were wondering about?

Not really anything specific that was already covered tcraig thank you.

Hello rben,

I’m in a similar situation as you, though an EF is admittedly much closer to me than you. I nonetheless have some difficulty attending given my hectic schedule. My best recourse has been my home altar. It’s my one place where my traditional spirituality can be perpetually fostered without interruption, and given its obvious connection to tradition, it serves as a constant reminder to pray unceasingly and to uphold our spiritual traditions with great fidelity even when doing so comes with great sacrifice.

If I were you, I’d start by incorporating a small space in your home for prayer. Decorate it modestly, and purchase a Roman Breviary and begin praying the hours. This has been the best way for me to live traditionally even when I cannot physically make it out to the EF Mass some hour and a half away.

I’d like to see a requirement from Rome that every parish make available at least one TLM every Sunday.

Well, I would personally love that as well, though I don’t know how economical for the Church that would be. I don’t think the EF is very popular here in SF. Then again, it hasn’t really had much of a chance.

I fear more for the spiritual lives of Catholics here than which form of the Mass they attend. Relativism is a plague here, and there’s seemingly no sense of the sacred whatsoever. Maybe it’s ill founded, but I think our loss of Friday abstinence, reverence for the Sacred Name of Jesus, keeping of Rogation Days, among other hallmarks of “traditional” Catholicism far outweigh the need for the EF over the OF.

I don’t mean to sound abrupt; but I don’t necessarily think living a traditional Catholic life requires you to attend the EF over the OF.

Nonetheless, to state the obvious, your options are:
  1. Drive to the EF if it’s that important to you; and
  2. Otherwise attend mass locally; or
  3. Move.
Perhaps you might find comfort if you spoke with some of your local priests about your, apparent, discomfort?

Pax,
OA
You need to realize that the celebration of Mass is not about what we “like.”
I’m sure that makes rben20 feel a whole lot better.

Never waste an opportunity 👍

Why ? You think Summorum Pontificum is a joke ?
I almost posted the same as he did, but I thought you just had a fit of pique or something. Here’s the truth: No one owes you anything. The Mass is a gift. You’re “owed” it like you’re owed birthday presents. Yeah, next time someone starts a thread asking what he can do to get a TLM started in his area, let’s make sure we tell him to tell his priest, “Listen here, pal, you owe me – and don’t you forget it!”

Frankly, I found your statement shocking. I’m truly amazed that it looks like you’re planning to stand by it. Surely I don’t remember any Traditional teaching that we ought to adopt a sense of self-righteous entitlement versus the Church. But that’s just me.

Yes it is just you. Another signature ad hominem swipe in the dark. You see what you just did ? I shouldn’t even explain it to you, but why not ?

Ok, oa posts @ 7 hrs before I even enter the conversation and you, in your signature haste and hatred for all things traditional, didn’t even catch it.

You think I’m the one he replied to don’t you ? Didn’t bother to read much huh ?

But hey, that’s just you … the epitome of self righteousness 👍

EDIT : Oh, you didn’t stick around. Drive by ?

This is one of the most erratic posts I’ve read here, sorry. I haven’t a clue what you’re trying to say, except that you’re angry. I guess I should have made clear the focus of my post was directed at Adeodatus, but I guess you’re adopting his sentiment for your own. Just to repeat: no one owes us one iota of anything. I’m simply baffled by a mindset that unpeaceful. There’s not need to take offense; it’s not an ad hominem at all. But maybe instead this is a good opportunity for a person to take stock – is a snarling, furious “they owe it to us” really the mindset one ought to cultivate? (Talk about making oneself a bad stereotype of the Angry Traditionalist!) I can’t believe that. A little tranquility about these things will go a long way. 🙂

Indeed you have no clue. You are trying to put words in my mouth I didn’t say.You still don’t get it do you ?

But what is nice is all any of us say is in black and white, and I’d bet 99 % of those who wonder what this is about can figure out what you can’t. or are denying.

You need an attorney lol

There is one important thing that I want to point out. In terms of priests offering the Holy Mass to whoever wants to attend, you’re right to say that they don’t do this because they owe us something. They do it (or rather, they should do it) because they owe God something. Having given their lives to him, they are obligated to say Holy Mass, but because of his merits, not ours.

That having been said, like all the sacraments, the Holy Mass is a gift, not from priests, but from God. If there is a priest who simply refuses to say Holy Mass in a reverent manner, then he is doing a disservice to God and his church on Earth, and God will not forget that, though he can still forgive them if they repent.

Numerous saints have said, in the past, that having the opportunity to honor God with greater reverence, and not taking it is to be considered sinful. While I will not for a moment suggest that The EF is superior to the OF by nature, it is a fact that many OFs, in certain countries, have been irreverently-celebrated.

This does not invalidate the Mass in any sense, but it is also disrespectful, and can easily weaken the faith of budding Catholics. Because of this, when celebrating the OF, priest must exercise care, and do their best to show respect for God, rather than merely accomidating the wishes of their congregation. It is not, as I said, an obligation to us, but to God.

This is the kind of thing I think of.

Here is what I would do:
  1. Attend the TLM 1.5 hours a way at least once per month; this shouldn’t be too much of a hardship.
  2. Buy a traditional breviary (either a Monastic Diurnal or Anglican Breviary for now, or wait a few month until the Baronius one comes out). Pray Lauds and Vespers, at least, every day and familiarize yourself with the traditional calendar.
  3. Don’t eat meat on Fridays, and fast on the traditional ember days. Consider keeping the traditional 3-hour fast before Mass.
  4. Find the most conservative, non-clowny NO Mass you can find and attend that as your regular Sunday Mass (or Daily if possible!).
  5. Buy a traditional Missal (Angelus or Baronius) and read the readings/prayers of the TLM Mass each day.
  6. Pray a daily rosary (or at least a decade if a full rosary every day seems daunting).
  7. Regularly visit this forum or Fisheaters (assuming it comes back up) to stay connected to other Tradition-minded Catholics.
